Windshield tint illegal in CA?
I'm about ready to buy a new Z and I noticed that almost all pics and road cars I seen do NOT have tint on the windshield. However, I have seen older Z's with windshield tint. Is this illegal, or are people just opting not to tint the front window? I think it looks kind of odd not too, at least a bit. The factory tint in my 300 was actually quite nice. It wasn't that blueish crap, but actually a dark tint in the glass itself. Makes me wonder why they don't do that on the new ones.
Anyone?

In CA you can tint the top 4" drop of the front windshield up to 20% if it doesn't drop below the driver's eye level. You can't have any other tinting on the front windshield.
On the rear side windows and windshield "behind" the driver, you can have any level of tint you want.
Side windows to the side or front of the driver can be up to 70%.
You are allowed to use UV reflective tint but you are not allowed to use light reflective tint. The tint can't effect the driver's view (i.e. bubbles, hazing, streaking, scratches, etc.). Tint can't be red or blue. If your vehicle came factory tinted you'll have to adjust your tint selection to compensate.

It appears CA law enforcement agencies are starting to crack down on illegal tint more frequently now. Be prepared.
I just keep a self-written note in the glovebox saying I have a medical need for it (with my medical license #, of course). It's gotten me out of a fix-it ticket once so far.

There have been several posts here from people who have gotten pulled over by local police and/or CHP and made to peel off their tint in front of the officer.

no, probably more like 95%; its mostly UV reflective. though its enough that if legal is 30% and you put 30%, a cop with a tint detector would come up illegal around 27%.
but yeah, california is one of the strictest states on everything.
its likely 35%; but I dont live in california. might be 50%.
