Question Dealer: "It's the clutch plate"

Did a search but didn't find what I was looking for.

Took the Z to the dealer the other day to complain about my tranny. When shifting from 1st gear to 2nd, there's a loud KERCHUNK! that sounds like the tranny is going to fall off the car. This usually stops after about an hour of driving, but even after that, it still grinds.

The service mgr. initially said, "oh, that's characteristic of Zs all the way back to the 1970s." I didn't believe him so he called NNA. They advised the clutch plate needs to be replaced with a new design because the current one "swells". It seems like a cheap way of getting out of replacing the whole tranny. Has anyone else been given this diagnosis? Can a clutch plate really swell?

My Z does the same thing but I've never bothered to get it checked out.

I have 35000 miles now, and the tranny has been the same since the first couple months.

Wow. And it hasn't gotten any worse?

I would think it's the synchros not matching up and then slamming into place. One thing I've noticed is that if I pull it out of 1st into the neutral gate, move it back and forth in neutral, and then move into 2nd, it's fine. This is driving me f---ing nuts!

Dealers suck when it comes to stuff like that. If they can't make the car do it when they are driving like grandma then it is fine in there eyes. I've been thru it with Nissan, chevy, and toyota.

My advise is just break the damn thing. I mean break it. When you can't put it in a gear is when they will replace the whole box.
with out a question. Or you can call nissan and tell them your dealer wont fix it and your getting upset. They will ussually have ti taken care of then.

My dealer is going to "fix" it. Their solution is a new clutch plate, which they're ordering. I think they're trying to take the cheap way out.
