Angry Very odd Z problem - anyone else experience this?

I've noticed that I hear a clicking sound from under the car, which seems to be coming from the rear, but I'm not positive.

It only happens when I'm at a stop, and beginning to roll and releasing the clutch. It stops when the clutch is fully released.

Sometimes it happens between shifts at low speeds (1st->2nd) when the clutch it depressed.

I only hear it when I'm going 20mph or less.

I figured it's the clutch, but the part that makes me think it could be something else is the fact it sounds like it's coming from the rear of the car, so I'm not sure what else it could be. The only mod's I have done concerning the rear of the car are lowering springs, and exhaust. And it doesn't make sense that one of those 2 would make a clicking sound, which only happens between shifts at under 20mph.

Anyone have this same problem or know what it could be? Thanks for any input.

Does it sound like something rolling across the rear like a bolt or something came loose?

I had a similar problem.

Do you hear it click twice?

My car is currenlty at the dealer for the second time about this issue.

In 1st gear, while moving, get the rpms up to about 3k and then just let off the gas suddenly, you should hear a click, and then if you step back on the gas, you'll hear a click again.

I thought it was linked to the clutch at first because it seemed to happen when I let off the clutch, but it is somehow related to the rear axel. (so I'm told).

I'm *told* that there is a loose bolt on the rear axel and the bolt sliding and hitting the retaining clip when the axel spins up or down suddenly is the cause of the clicking sound.

I've taken my car in 3 times now about this, and Nissan Engineers have been notifed *supposedly*.

I'm usually skeptical in regards to what my dealer tells me...

Interesting.

Now is this bolt related to any modifications or is it just a problem in the factory axel? I have had a new tranny put in (I had no problems prior to that), new exhaust, and lowering springs. I doubt any of those mods can contribute to the axel nuts and bolts, but do you have any of those modifications?

Is this a serious issue I need to address right away or can this be taken lightly?

Thanks a lot. This is why this site is amazing, now I know exactly what to tell my dealer to look into instead of getting the "It's your aftermarket exhaust/springs so we can't work on it" bull run around.

Thanks again.

^Is the reason I havent brought my car in for this. I wish there was a way I could look to fix this myself. A lot of people seem to have this problem though. Its more annoying than something Im worried about like say the transmission.

Someday itll be fixed

If the dealer IS right, and it IS a bolt on your axel!!!! I'd be very concerened since the only reason it hasn't fallen of is because of a retaining clip!!!!!!!!!!

And my car has NO modifications (except a sunroof ^_^)

19,500 miles though...

I started noticing this at about 12k miles took it in, they tightened the bolt it went away, then at 18,900 miles I noticed it again.

I'm just wondering, how accurate was my description of the cause of the noise for you? Did you have same occurrence?

Many people are experiencing the same issue (including me). It seems to be fixed by relubbing the rear axles...

My dealer is replacing one of my axles (passenger side). Mine clicks throughout 3 gears and now starting to on 4th as well. Furthermore, on 1st & 2nd gear at WOT there is a loud rattle much like a loose catalytic converter cover (for those who've ever heard one). I hope this is solved at Nissan for the future...23k miles here - started ~3 weeks ago.

the problem is loose real axle bolts. nissan will only adjust that if your car mileage is under 12k. if you're over that, you're SOL.

Does this happen when you shifting or during acceleration?

I have the same problem started at 500 miles - dealer said not a problem - thanks for the great thread and access to the TSB - good stuff - now I am prepared with documentation to head back to the dealer....

UPDATE:

Thanks for all your comments and replies guys. Because of your help I was able to tell my dealer exactly what I suspected it was (thanks to the forums) , and it turned out that was the exact problem. The dealer didn't even know there was a TSB or that this was occuring on the Z's, but now know this is a more common problem for Z's with 15k+ miles.

Just FYI, they tightened the bolt using a breaker bar, and lubed it up, so they told me I shouldn't have any more problems.

On a side note, there was a rattle coming from my passanger dash side area, and when they checked it out, it turned out to be a piece of trim from the A-Pillar rattling around, if anyone else is experiencing this just check your A-Pillar or tell your dealer to.

Thanks again for your help. Another problem resolved

I hope this isn't a dumb reply, but have you checked your tire tread? Maybe something like a pebble in it.
