Lightbulb new info from NNA rep about irregular tire wear

I talked to an NNA customer relations representative today, and related my concerns that tire replacements and alignments were a band-aid and not a solution for the tire wear problems.

He agreed and told me that the current TSB is acting as a method to hold-over 2003 Z owners until the engineering team can come up with a permanent solution. According to him, the Nissan engineers are working feverishly on a better, permanent solution.

Interesting information... and I'm not sure I trust it 100%. Has anyone else heard anything similar?

I have a 2004 with 12,000 miles and tires that clearly show a very irregular heel-toe wear pattern on the inside edge, and will require replacement very soon before they wear down to the cords. He says that 2004 models are not currently covered, but the NNA customer relations people have gotten lots of calls from 2004 owners with similar reports. He said he expects an updated TSB covering 2004 cars by the end of the year.

I bet you wouldn't have gotten him to say that if you were recording the conversation and had informed him so at the begining of your conversation. Sounds like something they'd say to get you off the phone.

I am sooooooooo glad I'm leasing. I've got a fix for the feathering, they get the car back at the end of the lease. Yes, I may be paying more in the long run, but the peice of mind in knowing that I won't be stuck with a car that eats tires is worth it to me.

Don't get me wrong, I love my Z. I don't want to give her back.

I've got a 2004.5 roadster, 13500 miles and the dreaded tire feathering. Getting new fronts next week, I hope, and the alignment adjustments. Clearly the 2004's are covered. I went to a dealer in Roanoke Rapids NC. They haven't had many Z's come through there but the service manager knew all about the tire feathering and the TSB. I was impressed.

the TSB really doesn't technically cover 2004 cars, but dealers may opt to cover them individually.

I don't feel like he was trying to get me off of the phone by just telling me something, but at the same time, I don't trust it 100%. We'll see.

Rich -- I'm glad to see the dealership is covering your roadster.. but as documented in various places, tire replacement and alignment isn't a solution to the problem -- it just makes it go away for a few thousand miles.
