3.5 litres and only 278bhp? Why?
the straight 6's problem with blowing engines had to do with the oil pump. on hard cornering, it wasnt lubing the engine good enough. simple fix for a car that had so much money spent in R&D? missed an easy one? oops?
comparing apples to oranges?

If you're not talking about the M3, then I have no idea what L6 you're referencing.
Z has 82 hp liters
911 has 88.8 hp liters
not that bad considering emission levels of the Z and the price!
if you look at NA sportscars, you will realize that 82hp liters is not that bad at all.
get a more flowing exhaust, a good intake and you basically in the same range.
could have more though

I could comment about how Americans are seen by some people of other nations as rude, ignorant and lacking brains, but some of you guys seem to do just fine justifying the sterotypes so I'll not bother.
Back to the subject in hand!
There are a great number of main stream models of car in the Uk that now put out over 220 Bhp. The hot hatch market gets more and more power, many next year will be close to the 250bhp mark. Vauxhall/Opel will bring out a 300bhp Vectra . Cars like the Sti, EVO and Z are in real danger of being swallowed up in the BHP stakes.
If the gentlemans agreement is still in place, (I thought it had gone but what one chap earlier said about Prodrive and Ralliart as manufacturer approved tuners makes sense) then it needs to be raised.

You cant compare cars from five years ago with today machines! You can only compare like for like models available to buy now!
Saying that, I was down at the BMW garage this moring looking at my mates new car with him. The dealer reckons next years M3 will have this years M5 engine in it! 400bhp! ! !

that 4L V8 is a massive piece of equipment. They'd need to completely rework the front end to fit it in, not to mention completely rework the suspension.
By the way, the 2001 Mustang GT was the fastest production Mustang since 1969, so there is some bearing in that comparison
