If you don't set the rings... and tend to baby it too much during break-in - you will find later on as you run it harder you'll be burning far more oil. Then potentially may not be making as much power.

BS to the sub 4k all during breakin.

Diddo. I drove 1200 miles in 5 days. No long trips, just driving around town. Took a bit of self discipline not to floor it, but I'd rather follow the suggestions in the owner's manual. Just made me feel better...

I have 1500 now, and do 80mph in 2nd gear...

I was kidding. We were talking about breaking in a car, and doing (or trying to do) 80 in 2nd gear would surely BREAK, not break-in a car. I am a Sunday driver, shifting around 3-4K RPM.

I'm just curious because those that buy used 350z's how in the heck would they know if the previous owner properly broke in the car or thrashed it?

Sorry this is now a myth in automotive technology. It use to be this way back in the day. But now all engines from the factory are tested and ran for at least 24 hrs to ensure proper break in. So basically the engine is already broken in before it gets installed in your car.

But I would drive easy anyways for the first 500-1000 miles to let all of the other parts break in well. Like the drivetrain for one.

I call BS to that logic.

The engineers don't tell you to break it in gently without a good reason. I think if you were supposed to "set them thar rings" the engineers would tell you to do so and the owners manual would reflect this. These cars are sports cars, and without a doubt they are designed to be driven hard, but thats after the break-in period. The manual clearly states the exact opposite of what you said. You risk loosing both horsepower and torque if you fail to follow the proper break-in procedure. Is that a blatant lie?

If you want to drive your brand new 30k sports car like you stole it, power to you. My 04 has about 5000 miles on it and it was broken in properly. I'm driving it like I'm making the guy who stole it look bad. Guess what? I'm not burning any oil!

There are a lot of good reasons to take it easy on a new car.

Sorry but just to give you a little bit of a arguement... I have 12k on my 04 G35 6mt. I drove it hard from the start. It uses AMSOIL since 1500 miles, and does not burn a drop of oil, and my exhaust tips inside are still clean. And I even took my car to the track several times within the first 2000 miles of the cars life. Guess what, it runs awesome.

Like I said before, the engine is already broken in from the factory. The only reason why they put the break in instructions is because the rest of the car hasn't been broken in yet.

Unless I'm mistaken, the engine has only been tested by the factory, which is not a substitute for a break-in procedure. If the factory broke the engine in, the manual wouldn't suggest that you could lose hp and tq if you didn't.

You are mistaken. They run the engines for at least 24 hrs. If you don't believe me, contact NISSAN.
