doing an oil change (who sees where Im going with this). I hate those little tubs. first the oil sprays out away from the bolt, then it trickles down and its like a friggin carnival game to try and keep the tub under the stream.

I failed... REALLY failed.

I spilt atleast a quart of oil.

and to make matters worse; I got this nifty thing from pepboys, its black with a yellow pour cap, and a yellow big top cap that covers where youd let the oil fall in,and it has a screen over the top cap so you dont lose the bolt.

yeah, so the side cap was leaking big time. just dripping oil everywhere as I scrambled to put the friggin skidplate back on so I can mop up the oil.



pressure washer saved the day... I hope.

FYI, don't forget to check the seal ring from the old oil filter. I forgot to do it once, and guess what - just that one time the ring did not come off and the new filter was not on tight. To make a long story short I ended up driving a whole block with no oil before I figured out it happened....... .

 

You will also notice that, if you leave the screen in the container that the oil is draining into, the oil will splash off of it and onto the driveway (been there - done that). Also, you will notice that, if you take out the screen and use a big funnel instead, if you happen to drop the drain plug into the funnel, the funnel will overflow before you can do anything (BT-DT, ha).

Now I just put a big sheet of cardboard under the car, remove the drain plug and hold onto it so it doesn't fall into the funnel, know that my hand will be sprayed with hot, dirty oil for a second or two, but don't really spill much at all. Guess I could use rubber gloves, but what fun would that be?

You can go to Costco and buy surgical gloves to do your oil changes. I loosen the plug and then unscrew it by hand not letting the plug drop. I also use a moving blanket and place the oil tube on top of it. No oil on the ground or on me.

 

I change my oil in the garage of my apartment building b/c it is against regulations to work on cars on the premises (garage door is half closed). In order to ensure I don't get a drop of oil on the garage cement, I have a $3 shower curtain underneath the car... works well and I can reuse the curtain for another change if I want.

Yeah, and I have the latex surgical gloves also... read enough of those cancer warnings to scare me into it

 

Get a can of paint thinner. Pour all over the oil spill, liberally. THEN apply the kitty litter (just use the cheapest, plain clay), let sit for about half an hour, giving the litter plenty of time to absorb the thinner.

The thinner dissolves the oil and the litter will absorb both, works like a charm. No oil stains in the drive!

 

with the cost of a case of oil and the oil filter being around $15.00 out here in Cali i figure I will just take it to the dealership for their $19.99 oil + filter special. They also stamp my book for warranty purposes. (if THAT means anything!)

no need to drip on the floor or spend the time taking the oil to get recycled!

Its the black blitz one with the yellow cap.
I have one and it works like trash!

Get the one with the wide top and a smallhole in the middle.
I used latex gloves to change my oil and its way worth it.

I spent like 33 bucks just for a Mobil1 Synthetic Oil change, But I think next time I may just take it to jiffy lube and bring my own oil.

I'd rather pay an extra 10 bucks then to crawl under the car and fiddle with all that crap esp since I have a small jack and I can only get it a foot off the ground.

 

Careful with Jiffy Lube... I've heard bad things about that place.
