Help!! Unethical Dealer - Nissan of Lakeland
That's absolutely ridiculous!! I'm pretty sure that when you give them money, what they give you on paper is a contract. At the very least it will hold up in court.
But those dealers will sure try to screw you out of every last penny!! Do not pay anything more than what was agreed upon. And if they continue to threaten to sell it out from under you, I'd really talk to my lawyer. If you have a buddy that is one, I'm sure you could get him/her to call the dealership to, uh, "straighten them out."
I'd rather hire someone to break the guys knees. It would sure be worth 400 bucks to me.

I might be mistaken here (and maybe some of the local legal eagles can confirm), but I thought I read something where a purchase agreement isn't legally binding unless there in a VIN which can be applied to the sales agreement. Without a VIN, it's just a meaningless piece of paper which only "talks" about selling a car.
My $0.02, the dealer does indeed have the upper hand. Try to work things out calmly and perhaps things will end up in your favor. One tactic I would avoid would be the toothless threat of having a lawyer contact them.
