Who cares about the damn ignition?? As long as it's functional and works properly!
I had a 2000 Pontiac Grand Prix SE (as a company car) that had a bunch of problems:
Loose Fuel Tank (Actually came loose and had to be re-bolted)
SUPER - CHEAP Interior Plastics that would break (i.e. cigarette lighter cover) - Nissan does a FAR better job with their plastics!
Bargain Basement Stereo (Again, Nissan's is better!)
Stupid Electrical Problems (Pontiac's Trademark) - Ever notice WHY there ISN'T a VOLTMETER on any Pontiac?? Hmmm??
Oh yeah, SUPER CHEAP Key Fob...Guaranteed to break or fail in 4-6 months.
Too Much more to mention...LOL
F*ck American and Korean Cars...BUY Japanese, baby!!

That's why some people can shell out 20k more for the M3 or something. Because people want all the little touches along with the performance. Personally, the cheapness of the Z pisses me off because the G35coupe has so many more little touches for the same price (Track MSRP vs 6MT MSRP). You paid 30k+ for the car, you have the right to get some of the little touches. It's not like my 37k Track model even comes with leather.

You can tell how high the demand is for lit ignition tumblers by all the aftermarket attention it has gotten.
Every magazine in the world said the interior of the Z seemed cheap. Why is this a surprise, are people not even doing research on the cars they buy? When you went to the dealer, did you not have a list of things to look for in a car you were spending so much money on? A fool and his money are soon parted.
I knew exactly what the shortcomings where when I got mine and my Z has been exactly what I expected. I have added a few personal touches like lumbar support and center console arm rest, extra lighting in the trunk and whatnot.
Tuning a car is not really about slapping on a bunch of parts, it's about making the car perform better for the driver.

The Z is cheap, but Nissan parts-bining is out of control. I expect better from Nissan. Even a cheap-@ss Honda has better interior bits.
Sure it's not a luxury car, but gay stuff like a single LED bulb to help you see her and there is not 200lb. No-one is asking for motorized seats with a massager.
Is that so much to ask: $5 for a better ignition?

Going back to the original question, I think some of you are being to hard on this guy. How is wanting to change your key any different than sticking in a hyper blue map lightbulb?

If he was asking how to make an illuminated ignition switch, I might have suggested getting a small piece of 1/4" lexan, cut into a loop with two hole saws of proper size to fit around the ignition, sand and polish to clear, drill a small shallow hole into the back edge for an LED, wire it up to the fuse box output that controls the dome light and attach using clear double stick tape or some such.
It might actually be a neat project to try although a bit time consuming for the results but is so unnecessary, no one ever will.
