I regreted it when I bought an auto 300zx a few years ago & I got a 6 speed 350z, LOVE it.

I drove in an auto 350z & it was actually pretty damn cool. It felt just as quick as the 6 spd, no slow shifting like in my old 300zx.

thx for the reply! finally =D!
so there's no point of having manual mode for A/T...since you can't down shift...;

Whether you can downshift or not, I would NOT get an automatic Z, period, unless you want it because you drive in trafic a lot, or whatever (I drive in traffic a lot too, Im in Chicago, but don't really care about that).

In chicago with manual.

This is a sports car, and it comes with standard transmission.

Period.

Yeah, I drive a 6spd too and I love it. But I don't think the auto is too far behind in terms of quickness.

you manual guys are so snowed over. this has been debated here numerous times and there is no answer to it. yeah you can make the sports car claim, but then again, go out there and find any rally or speed car driver and they will tell you 9 times out of 10 that they would prefer auto, takes out the human error factor in shifting and you get a faster more consistent car. but also you have the argument that you do lose some control of what the car does and for the Z you definately want that control, its like driving a video game in real life. I have driven both and love both for their respective reasons.

bottom line is there is no answer here, all personal taste. no one can claim sports car=manual shift. hell all cars were manual at one point.

i should consider this as personal interest rather than opinion/function. cuz in the end, you're the one who's driving it for as long as you own it. i'd say get w/e you like better.

First of all you should get whichever transmission you feel comfortable with. The Z is not a great car to learn on given its torque, its heavy shifter, and its clutch.

As for what your friend has to say...more Gs are auto b/c of the people that buy them. Although there is a crowd of G35 enthusiast drivers, they represent a small fraction of people who buy the G. Most non-enthusiasts prefer an auto...hence autos tend to be more popular in the G.

Both are great rides, you should drive them and see which one you like more.

btw; if i decide to get manual...definately 350z...
but if i decide to get auto...should i get 350z or G35 coupe???
cuz some ppl told me to get G35 coupe A/T than 350z A/T...since auto is more like *luxury*
so conclusion for A/T...G35 coupe...
manual...350Z?
sorry i have too many stupid questions...however its not like that i am buying $30 car...we r talking about $30,000...

The 300's auto is LITERALLY years behind in terms of shifting speed and fun quotient, when contrasted with 350 5AT. I have owned more manuals than autos in my life, and my wife and I actually traded in a G356MT coupe AND a Honda S2000 (only comes w/6MT) AND a Honda Civic Si (5 spd man.) on two Z roadsters.

The truth is I expected to miss the manuals more than I did after I took a couple of months getting used to the man. shift mode of the auto. My Z is a daily driver w/about 50-50 city versus country highway driving, w/lots of stop and start in urban traffic jams. Also, in my line of work, cell phone use, meals, electric shaving, etc., while driving is a must, as I often work 70 hrs./wk. (flame away, but I do slow down while doing those things, and avoid them when in congested traffic).

While out on those country highways, however, I have always been an "assertive" driver, when I have the chance to devote my undivided attention to driving, both hands on wheel, etc., and I fully expected to lose the "connectedness w/the machine, the feeling of control, the fun factor," yada, yada, yada, but I really didn't, at least not much. I will admit than in an ideal world, I'd still own a manual for those reasons, but new autos are rapidly closing the gap, and I LOVE the versatility of my 5AT. Take it from a lifetime manual driver.

Peer pressure can be a *****... but do whatever makes sense for you...

A/T Zs will do circles around chump M/T drivers that can't handle their M/T all they long without trying too hard.

definately 6spd, even though Z would have better m/t based auto transmission system like smg or f1 paddle shift like ferrari, i'll still get m/t.

theguykevin,

I went through what you are experiencing now. See, all of my cars were manuals, just before the last one. The last car was an automatic and I enjoyed it.

But when I was ready to buy a Z, it was a hard decision. Two reasons were traffice in L.A. and my wife doesn't know how to drive stick.

At the end, I bought a manual and never look back. Its so fun on the weekend with the manual. It feels like you are driving a race car.
