"We've seen what Porsche is doing with the Cayman, and I would like our new car to have more power, less weight and be more driver-focused," he said. "There's certainly a market in Europe for such a machine - it's simply a matter of convincing our US and Japanese divisions that this is the way forward."
Its not going to be an 08, i am planning on buying the new evo that is due for late 07-08 and it has a concept now....i havne't seen anything on the new z.
Its going to be a 2009 imo. That quote tells you they haven't even started designing it yet. They all don't agree yet on a solid design/goal for the car. I

i would hope it will take them long, instead of sharing the same platform and the same engine with everything else in the nissan line..........if nissan is going to compete with porsche then they have to put some more individual effort in engineering the next z. Just my opinion.

+1 They really need a new platform for the Z. The current one is ok; it's definetly very tough, but it's heavy and not ideal for a sports car. I'm hoping they will share it with the GTR, at least the design, if not all the materiels.

Nothing has been announced or even rumored so far.
My best guess is that we’ll see a preliminary/concept of the next Z at next year’s Tokyo or Detroit auto show and then a production model as a 2009 or 2010 model.
Obviously with the new GT-R coming and continued improvement from the Z’s competitors in the handling and horsepower departments, the next Z will need improvement in those areas to remain competitive.
Like most of you; I’ve heard the rumors of a 4.5L V8 making its way into the Z…I would not be surprised but neither would I hold my breath. A V8 is somewhat of a departure from the direction the Z has built its reputation on so I would bet on a very advanced and significantly improved V6 if they can tweak another 50-75HP out of it. I’m not taking anything away from the V8s but the VQ engine is such a well designed engine that I’d hate to see it not continue in the Z in some form.
In some ways, I expect we’ll see a similar situation develop between the Z and the GT-R as has been the case for Chevy between the Corvette and Camaro for the past 35 years or so.
Another thought - sooner or later, someone is going to have to put the brakes on the horsepower wars – if manufacturers don’t do it on their own the government will eventually step in and say enough is enough.
