$35k base price means twice as reliable and half as many recalls

Supra's Suck. They do. They were an over priced over weight non handling POS. They had a great engine, but a great engine doesnt make a great car. As far as a new one, I sure hope they make the changes needed to change my perception of them. I am sure they will. You will see a six figure price tag and performance to match. Big deal. And to say that something is better than X company could ever build is just stupid. Chevy could build something that could just make everything be something of shame. What crock.

A few years ago I was listening to Click and Clack (the radio car guys) and they had a women who kept going through transmissions in her van... They asked that question and she said yes and they said most likely that is what was causing it...
... and now back to your regularly scheduled thread
I feel that you're blowing issues WAY out of proportion. Every new model of a car has its issues. Evos have clutch problems(going out SOON), tranny (5th gear grinds) and rod bearing issues. STi's have had TONS of issues, from rearends, to rear axles, to just about everything. I have two close friends who have had major issues with pampered cars. LS1's had weak rod bolts in 97 and 98, and the 01 Z06's had oil consumption issues. 03+ Cobras have leaky rear ends, valve tick, and the 7th cylinder issues. Spec V's have ****ing garbage motors (I went through 3). I speak only from personal, or close friend experiences.
I could go on all day. Nissan seemed like they fixed the biggest problem (03 trans). People sometimes have to high of standards, especially with performance cars who usually end up in the hands of enthusiast drivers. I have a 350z, I beat the living **** out of it, but I also maintain it quit extensively. I feel that Nissan did a great job with the car, and I looked forward to being a buyer of the 370z when it comes out. I just

you can go on any S2k forum and find a host of issues those cars have had too....no car is immune to mechanical electrical problems, or just general "quirks". What you also will find are annecdotal posts from members ranging from "this is the biggest POS car I've ever had" to "this is the best new car I've ever had". I've had my Z since 2003, bought it new, and it's been the best new car I've ever owned. It has never been back to the dealer for a single warranty/dealer repair since the day I took it home

Supra's do not handle? That is sheer mendacity, sir.
December 1996
The magazine tested "20 of the best handling cars in the world" and the NSX was ranked 4th overall (after Elise, WRX and MGF, all unavailable in the US) but it was fastest around the track. Quite surprising if you consider the competition, which included Porsche 911 Carerra, BMW M3, Mercedes E36 AMG, Toyota Supra, Nissan Skyline GTR, Lamborghini Diablo, Lotus Elise, TVR Cerbera, Caterham Superlight, Jaguar XK8, Nissan Skyline, and the NSX of course.
Place of action was Thruxton circuit, the fastest racetrack in Britain. It's tricky (and bumpy too) which means it's ideal to find out everything about a car's handling.
Best lap times were the following
1. 1:32.12 Honda NSX
2. 1:32.84 Toyota Supra
3. 1:33.16 Porsche 911
4. 1:33.18 Lamborghini Diablo SV
5. 1:33.36 Nissan Skyline GTR
6. 1:33.42 TVR Cerbera
7. 1:33.78 BMW M3
8. 1:33.80 Caterham Superlight
9. 1:34.01 Subaru Impreza Turbo
10. 1:34.24 Lotus Elise
As for the braking and skidpad...
The stock MKIV Supra chassis has also proven an effective platform for roadracing, with several top 20 and top 10 One Lap Of America finishes in the SSGT1 class. The Supra is one of the heavier 2-door Japanese sports cars, however still lighter than the Nissan R33 and R34 Skyline GTRs to which the Supra is traditionally a rival in its home country. The Supra was also lighter than the Mitsubishi 3000GT VR4 and the Nissan 300ZX Turbo. Despite its curb weight, in 1994 the MKIV managed a remarkable skidpad rating of 0.95 lateral g's (200ft) or 0.98 lateral g's (300ft) [1] due in part to a four-sensor four-channel track tuned ABS system with yaw control whereby each caliper is sensored and the brakes are controlled individually according to the speed, angle, and pitch of the approaching corner. This unique Formula One inspired braking system allowed the Supra Turbo to record a 70 mph (110 km/h) -0 braking distance of 149 feet (45 m) [2], the best braking performance of any production car tested in 1997 by Car and Driver magazine. This record was finally broken in 2004 by 3 feet (0.91 m) by a Porsche Carrera GT.

To give Nissan a hard time about tire feathering (which happens on other cars too mind you, and where there are several easy solutions to) and window motors (which is a recall item BTW, and again, which can happen on other cars), is a bit far reaching IMHO. Subaru's have constantly had transmission issues in all their 5 speed models, from the RS to WRX.....and last I checked those weren't invented yesterday either. Impreza's of all kinds have also had issues going back to the 90's over windshields creaking and often cracking when doing nothing more than pulling into a driveway...surely glass wasn't invented yesterday either. Front wheel bearings are another problem area on Subaru's, and 98-99 RS's are well known to have clutch master cylinders that go poo poo in the 30-40k mile mark. My point is, again, that a car is a machine. Show me a single machine in history that has not had any issue, for any reason, ever. A 350Z comes apart just as easily as a WRX does...I should know, as I have had both apart and back together more times than I can count as I've done upgrades. Like any other car, it has it's quirks. If you want a vehicle free of quirks, you could always buy a canoe

I suppose you do have a good point. Maybe I just had such a good experience with my old RS and the WRX that my view is a bit biased. Not that my Z has treated me well. We all read about issues here all the time but to be fair, my Z has been relatively trouble free.....and it's supposedly the worst year, 03. I've been pretty satisfied with it up to this point and I have to say that this is the first car I owned that has not given me that itch after about a year to look for something new.

Oh, and black window streaks and two radio replacements (sound would cut out on one channel while playing cd's). I (currently) own Fords, Chryslers, a GM, and of course, the Nisson 350Z.
. . . .and despite all the problems that I've had with the Z, I still like it.

After reading through all of these posts, I'm surprised no one has mentioned the weak dollar contributing to the $35K entry point. Considering all Z's are manufactured in Japan it's likely that that is the main cause. Does anyone have any info in how much the dollar / yen conversion rate has changed over the years?
That might explain a lot...

the USD-Yen conversion isn't that bad right now, kinda average, not low or high and seems like it's on an bull run since March.

This is very different from the USD-Euro trend where we're in a ditch right now

You should see how many problems RX8s have. Some people go through as many motors as 350Z people go through transmissions that merely have bad syncros!
A friend of mine has a BMW 335i. in 2000 miles he had to have a fuel pump, fuel injector, driveshaft and differential replaced.
