Here is a side picture and you can see it still has a trunk. It doesn't look like a toad to me, it sort of looks like a 350z.
Thanks for posting this side view pic. Looks better... but check out how small it will be in comparison to the 350. I knew it was going to be smaller, but damn, they're shortening it quite a bit, and taking a small chunk off the top. I still hope they redesign both the front and rear bumpers.
Nissan clearly identified the major problems they wanted to rectify with the 370z. They were looking to make it lighter and smaller than the 350z because that was the largest complaint about that car.
So essentially they have taken the 350z and tried to refine it into a smaller, lighter and faster car, with a few extra minor modifications here and there.
Why you think this beast is supposed to be something totally new is beyond me.

It's also a move to the new FM platform that underpins the rest of the FM lineup, which is stiffer than the older FM platform. It's definitely the next full iteration and improved in a lot of ways, though it's not a revolutionary departure from the current generation.
