It seems I am not the only one that thinks the 370Z brings back memories of the 240Z, a car which I have great admiration and respect for. I have been migrating to another site that specializes in just the 370Z, (this one has been getting a little wacky lately), and found this. Didn't see it posted here yet.

Pretty cool... I feel like I finally understand wtf the point is of the fangs on the new 370. They look kinda like the vertical bumper things on the old 240Z. I definitely like the similarity in the side glass and roofline as well.

Man, I just realized that when you mentioned it. I mean, the fangs line up exactly with the hoodline like the vertical bumpers exactly like the 240Z. OK, I get it now!

"Conclusion
The 2009 Nissan 370Z arrives with the long hood, short rear deck proportion of the original 240Z and does so in a fresh and handsome new way. Although we'll have to see it in person to know for sure, so far this appears much less an evolution of the 350Z and more a homage to the original Z car design philosophies, something we wholeheartedly welcome."

"Overall, the 2009 Nissan 370Z offers up a more compact and muscular, yet organic and sophisticated look than its predecessor. Where the 350Z appeared to be a long-legged GT cruiser, the 2009 Nissan 370Z returns to its 240Z roots but adds just enough muscle and aggression to give the look of a proper race track brawler." -- Motor Trend
"For those who don't climb underhood or stomp on the throttle, the most visible change will likely be the Z's new curves. Sure, it still carries the 350Z's general shape, but the car's form is considerably different. From what we can tell, the 370Z's proportions and taut body lines make the car look lighter and more akin to the original 240Z." -- Automobile Magazine

When the 370 pics were first released, I immediately saw the similarity of the body line that runs from just behind the headlight and along the bottom edge of the side window then up behind the back of the little rear window. I have a good friend who owned a 240 back when they first came out and know the car well.
I doubt the fangs were intended to emulate the bumper guards on the 240 (at least those are vertical for what it's worth). For me the comparison doesn't move me closer to the 370...will wait for next gen a few years down the road.
