2015 z
Little more info about the Z35....
The next Z will be smaller and lighter than the current model, though it won’t be positioned as a Toyota GT86/ Scion FR-S rival, Nissan development chief Andy Palmer revealed to Autocar.
The concept may debut with an electric powertrain that could find its way into the production car, although a gasoline motor will of course continue to be offered, Palmer said.
Rumors have suggested that the 370Z successor will share an updated version of Nissan’s FM rear-wheel-drive with the Infiniti Q50. More aluminum and other weight-saving measures will be used to pare down performance- and efficiency-sapping mass.
The familiar VQ V6 will return for another round of duty – although it will likely gain direct injection to boost output to around 350 horsepower - and the current six-speed manual and seven-speed automatic transmission options will remain.
Given Renault-Nissan’s increasingly close relationship with Daimler, a Mercedes-Benz turbocharged four-cylinder is a possibility as an entry-level motor.

for the love of god no. a turbo 4 cylinder would be a waste. if for whatever reason nissan chooses to go away from the VQ they would need to go back to a straight 6 like the old z cars. hell, a new edge straight 6 turbo would be pretty nuts.
Guys, the Z is at a crossroads. Some us old timers/VQ lovers want more of the same
with more HP.Looking at the future this would appear to be the dinosaur approach.
IMO,the new Z needs to have innovative new features at a competitive price.
Those who are critical of a 4cyl turbo probably have never driven one.A lighter car
is indeed the answer.A price under 35k is also part of the model.
For those of us,owners of the VQ,many satisfied with the power output, plus all the newbies going from a Civic to a Z,there seems to be a ready market for the
aftermarket guys offering goods to upgrade a Z to fit the customer"s needs.
Actually, the new Z does not need to be another BRZ/FRS where the only difference is the color.
The real Z guy goal is to have a Z that is not like any other.
THats what I've done.

everything is always interesting to see. wether good or bad it will still be opening up to a whole other z market. as stated above hopefully it doesnt end up like a brz/frs type thing. only time will tell i suppose
It makes sense that they would do this - every generation the car gets a bigger engine with more power. You can't do this forever, because someday you'll have a 9000z instead of a 370z , so a new concept is needed. A turbo 6 would be sweet but if they can get 350 hp out of a turbo 4 then that will be great as well.

agreed but the only thing i dont like about the idea of a 4 cylinder is the z has one of the strongest heritage lines and correct me if im wrong but i dont believe a z has ever had a 4 cylinder in it from the factory
FAIL
It sounds like Nissan might be bastardizing the next Z into something that should instead be the next S-chassis/successor to the 240SX.
No thanks. When I say goodbye to my 370Z, it's gonna be hello to the C7 Corvette Stingray.

If they go with direct injection there will be a motor swap in my 350's future.
As long as they DON'T include start/stop technology then it wouldn't matter that much to me the motor type. As long as it keeps the basic design. FR chassis, coupe and manual!
Why does everyone make the FRS/BRZ the measuring stick for the Japanese sub-40k market? You can get a base 370z for barely more money and it's a much better car all around. You can buy a Miata and probably have a better car than the FRS/BRZ. Toyota is a hype beast and their current lineup is BLAND.
I think everyone should just wait and see, If indeed they go with a 2.5T as rumored I would expect more power on tap than our VQs can generate. I know I can get much more power out of my 2.0T from my EVO than I have been able to with similar money from my 350Z. I suspect a bigger 4 cylinder could up that sum even more. The only drawback I really see is the tradition, but they already watered that down when moving from I6 to V6. If it looks and runs like a z should I would be interested.

I have always loved older Zs and that's why of this happens, 370z will be the last true Z.
Meh. If they do away the 6 cyclinder I'm going to a Porsche cayman. A z has never had a 4 banger. If they want something innovative they should do a straight 6, inline 6, boxer 6, or bring back the twin turbos or offer a retro t top option. Or they can make it a mid engine. A mid engine boxer 6 would be sick.
Let's read the article:
"The familiar VQ V6 will return for another round of duty – although it will likely gain direct injection to boost output to around 350 horsepower - and the current six-speed manual and seven-speed automatic transmission options will remain."
So those that like what the Z is now will be able to get what they want, a slightly evolved 370. I would've liked to see a 7 speed manual though, I could definitely use another gear on the highway.

I just hope they release a decent looking, brand new design that completely breaks from the 350Z and its inbred successor. It should have a jaw-dropping look that puts it in a class by itself...in the same way the 350Z hit the market when it was first released in 2003.
It's time for the Nissan designers to recover their credibility. They should also bring back the signature exhaust note and move away from giving the car a Buick-like smooth ride. It's a sports car after all. I'd also like to see paddle shifters as an option for those of us who aren't interested...but that's probably a pipe dream.
