Default GT-R Breaks Ring Record! (evo)

Nissan takes GT-R around the Norschleife and breaks previous 7min 29sec lap record

16th April 2009

Nissan has tried to put to bed the controversy surrounding the GT-R’s Nurburgring lap record by having another crack. And it’s good news for the Japanese – the 2010 model year GT-R, with 478bhp and a modified launch control – beat the previous 7min 29sec time with a 7.27.56.

The car was piloted by Toshio Suzuki, a former stand-in Formula 1 driver, but Nissan still isn’t quite satisfied with the time – ‘although dry, the track surface grip was impaired by dust and sand’. That means another attempt is due in the next few days, with the Corvette ZR-1’s 7.26.40 firmly in Suzuki’s sights.

As well as a smidge extra power, the updated GT-R gets a retuned gearbox, fettled suspension, a larger fuel tank and slightly better fuel economy, although this probably wasn’t too key around the Nordschleife. Stay tuned for more updates as Nissan continues its efforts at the Ring.

Title is misleading lol. I knew they beat their previous time but not the ring record hehe.

Curious to see what the Spec V will pull.

True... I assumed that the "ring record" in question was in some specific class that didn't include the ZR1. (or Radical, Zonda, Enzo, etc...)

They are probably meaning that it broke the previous GT-R record.

nice time, it has the ZR1 in sight, but the Dodge Viper ACR's time of 7:22.1 is still out there...

should also be interesting to see if GM sends the Zr1 back on the 'ring if the GTR beats the current time

Thats one impressive V-6. Nissan should look into developing/making a V-8.

Exactly! Records won't be broken but it sure as hell would be entertaining.

I noticed that too. Those aren't the Spec V brakes. Wonder why they used those wheels...

Just to make things clear

The assault on the Nurburgring for 2009 has begun as promised. After just a few testing days Nissan Chief Test Driver Toshio Suzuki-san has managed to beat his previous best of 7:29 in a base model series II Nissan GT-R with a 7:27.56 lap. The car was standard except for being fitted with optional Nismo ClubSport package Rays 20″ forged aluminium wheels. Dunlop tires were fitted to the Rays wheels.

The laptime was set at 6.52pm on the 15th of April. Ambient temperature was 21 degrees C, track temp was 26 degrees and relative humidity was 25%. They’re back out again today trying to go faster again.

As promised, to keep everything above board, members of the press were in attendance as well as representatives from Porsche Stuttgart.

Why exactly they’re using this combination of wheels and tires we will hope to find out soon. We’re also chasing up some further imagery to show you. As for the photo you see above - it is not the car in question but is a SpecV Nissan GT-R being tested at the Nurburgring earlier this week.

No telling... it'll be interesting to see what the Spec V runs considering it's not the "top of the line" model.
