Default New Japan Domestic Market GT-R Unveil

By the time most of you read this, unveiling of of the new JDM GT-R will likely have already occurred as it's slated for Tuesday, Sept. 14 at 2:30PM JST (10:30PM PDT).

But if you're interested, I'm sure the link above will take you to the Nissan YouTube Channel with redirect to their page on the new GT-R.

My take based on everything read so far: "Evolved R35" and NOT a whole new car.

But the rumor mill is alive with scuttlebutt that we might finally see a hybrid powertrain in MY2023 putting out almost the same as the current GT-R Nismo. (600bhp) Nice. the other rumor, but I think pretty unlikely, is a GT-R version based around the GT-R50 drivetrain.... 700-some bhp (big motor, aggressive boost tuning). Pretty competitive at 2.9 secs to 60 but still a whole second off the Tesla S Plaid. (Which, IMO, is just nutz ridiculous. Like Ludicrous mode isn't fast enough? Either way, both are well beyond the typical owner/driver capabilities and destined to star on an episode of "Supercar Fails." )

I'm looking forward to the unveil ... crazy that the R35 has been in production for 13years +/- without a major redesign?

I'm sure it'll make the social media hits...

and sad to see what happens to the R35 market after the R36 is released... seems like the R35 market has taken a beating for some time.

James, sorry to disappoint but according to JNC, one possibility for the USDM R35 is "bye bye" after model year 2022 (where 2021 spec carries over into MY '22 as a '21! Whuuuuuutttt?). But, speculation also leads to the possibility of an all new GT-R come 2023. Like the new Z, not holding my breath until Nissan makes an announcement at least.

From the article:

"There have already been rumors from Japan’s Best Car magazine providing an unofficial near-future timeline for Godzilla. There’s supposedly a hard stop on GT-R production at the end of 2022. The next GT-R (which we don’t know if we can call the R36) will be a heavily reworked version of the R35. This part of the grapevine gossip seems possible."

Watched the unveil and dang... loving the colors line up

As I watched, I wondered myself... what if they made a GT-R with electric battery to make it even faster? But that may not happen as GT-R is surely being phased soon for a new GTR.

Lots of talk about using hybrid tech in whatever the GT-R becomes but there are doubts it will happen for at least another few years. Apparently, Nissan is committed to ICE technology for a bit. But who's to say? Purely speculation at this point.

I've been wanting Nissan to go back to basics but sadly it won't ever happen. At least the midnight purple and green interior are gorgeous but with such a limited run it'll be hard to get one.

I thought for sure with the new Z paying tribute to the 240z and the 300z the R36 would be a slam dunk tribute to the R34 …

That’s an interesting dynamic … do you severely limit production (like Toyota did with the 4th gen Supra or what Mazda did with the FD RX7) and make very limited runs or do you flood the market like they did with the Z33, R35, (and every other car manufacturer). I tend to think with the success of the R35 they’d ride that wave and crank them out.

TBH it creates a frenzy and everyone rushes to buy them due to it possibly being a good investment. Same with all these limited edition Supras they are pumping out, that's the only way they are selling that car tho. The GTR is more popular.
