From my research I have been able to confirm that the old top cover assembly (not complete top assembly mechanism) 97150-CF000 has been superseded by a new part number 97150-CE40A. Not sure if the 3rd. generation has a different part number.

On further research, I now come up with 3 different part numbers for a black convertible top cover (not complete top assembly).-
-97150-CF000 Old part number no longer avaliable.-
Supercession Note: 97150-CF00A is now replaced by 97150-CF40A
-97150-CE40A Price.- $1,347.35.-

-97150-CF40A Price.- $1,625.73 (3rd generation top?)
http://www.courtesyparts.com/Merchan...Category_Code=
I wonder what the difference between 97150-CE40A & 97150-CF40A is that it's almost $300 more. Will try to find out more tomorrow.
Same thing with the blue top cover, 3 different part numbers.-
-97150-CF010.- Old Part Number
Partnumber 97150-CF010 was superceded!
Old Partnumber: 97150-CF010
New Partnumber: 97150-CF40B
-97150-CE40B Price.- $1,347.35

Got my car back from having the new top installed. The part number for the top they installed for my 04 Touring Roadster was 97150-CE40A. Apparently this is the updated part number for my vehicle. The part number varies from the different years so apparently the 06's have a different frame which is why they have a different top part number (97150-CF40A).
The install took 2 days for which they provided me with a free rental car. They sent it to a upolstery shop to have the new top put on. The new top definatly has upgraded stitching along the rear side seams, especially along the passenger side where the rear top seam meets the rear side seam (which is where the most separations seem to occur) where they have added an additional piece of top material welded into the seam. On the inside of the top you can see the upgraded stitching and they also have applied adhesive over the seams. The fitment on the new top is perfect, the upolstery shop did a very good job. The top seems very tight on the vehicle, but that is probably because it is new. The only issue I see with the new top is that on the inside, you can see the adhesive along the rear side seams and along the rear top seam (see area circled below) Which looks nasty. Does anyone else with a replace top have this? It seems they should have covered this up with some of the cloth tape they used along the seams that run from the front to the rear of the top. Overall the top does look better constructed than the original one. Hopefully it will solve the separation issues.-

Thank you for the info XtaZee, that is good news that they have made some changes to the top. My car will come out of winter storage in about a month. Will take it into the dealer to get it fixed.

#2 top
My 04, (June 03 build date) has had seperating seams, chewed up gaskets in the windshield frame (where the top locks into the frame on each end) and the pin holes. Top #2 is holding up OK so far.

I just got my car back from the dealer with top #4 installed. I have P/N 97150-CF40B now, and it appears to have a little more sealant as in the pic xtazee posted. It also looks like the satin-like band covering the side seams is a little wider. Otherwise, I am guessing this top will fail as well, as the issue of where it separates has not really been addressed even in this top.

CRAP! After reading this thread I took a look at my ZR and noticed holes starting to form again on the rear top seem - passenger side. This is my second top. I guess I will head back to the dealer.
The good thing about this forum is I may not have noticed this until after my warranty ran out.

I think if there is one thing that would make be by the BMW Z4, it's this problem with the tops... why the heck doesn't Nissan come out with a better top for 2005-2006 Z's...

I hear that. I drive maybe 1000 mi a month. I love the car except for this top.
My concern is that the dealer replaces the top (for the third time) and the next time it won't be under warranty. If the replacement top looks the same, I'm going to a custom dealer that installs (and makes) these tops to see if there is anything they can do. I would pay a few hundred dollars if they could reinforce the seems effectively.
Argh!

I drive with the top down about 98% of the time, and luckily it doesn't rain much here. Because of this, I am seriously considering calling it a lemon and having Nissan buy it back if this routine continues. Don't get me wrong, it is an excellent car, and I have had no other real problems other than the top separation.

Mines and early '04. The first top had to be replaced May last year. As for the BMW comment, I had an E36 (328is) before this car. BMW has their gremlins too.
