I live in Orange County which is about 30 miles south of LA and even here housing is very expensive.

I have 1 bedroom condo which is going for about $400K. Most houses in this area are at leaset $700K and up.

Anything halfway decent (4 bed and over 3000 sqft) is going for over a million here

Maybe that why I am alway short of money too.
So. cal is a very cool place to live but, for 400k you could have 4000 square feet here in OK. That is new construction, used houses are even less.

Ah, well, I can't help myself ...

1) Oklahoma, the South? I grew up in the South, went to college in the South and most of my family still lives in the South. Oklahoma is not the South.

2) I'm black, and I am amazed at the notions people have about racism in the South. Does it exist? Yes. Is it as bad as people who don't live there make it out to be? No. Frankly, you're more likely to be treated badly certain places in the South simply because you aren't from there and have an uninformed idea about attitudes there. And I can't say I've encountered more racism there than other places. And I grew up in the "Heart of Dixie," Alabama.

But this is way off topic ...

I have to applaud people who carry that load, so here's to you. BTW, Montgomery, N.Y.? Isn't that the home of Orange County Choppers? Or near there?

400K here gets you a Mansion on 100 Acres. No Joke.

I have a 1/2 Acre in town with 2500sqft, brick and paid less than 100k...

you can't even get a townhouse in a decent neighborhood here for that amount. there is a house down the street going for $350,000, but it's being sold as a teardown on a nice lot, so the house is like a freebie that the buyer probably won't ever live in.

i own a large junkyard/salvage yard in the MD/DC/VA area and own couple of assets around town. At my age i dont need a ferrari. Maybe when i start makin a little bit more money as i open up few more businesses ill get to buy one before i turn 30 but at my age i think a Z is sufficient. Besides in order for you to afford a ferrari and pay for other expenses you should be makin way over 300k/year. Once i start makin over 500k ill think about it

Agreed. 300k/year is not sufficient income to own a Ferrari assuming that the rest of your lifestyle is also commensurate with your income. Remember that at that income level, you pay about 40% of your income in taxes. You also lose a portion of your deductions for mortgage interest, state tax and property tax due to the Alternative Minimum tax. If you own a nice home, have multiple reasonably nice vehicles, kids in private school, are saving to put your kids through college debt free, take some nice vacations, etc. you really don't have money left for a Ferrari. If you look at the demographics of Ferrari owners, of which there are 20,000(approx) worldwide, their average income is about $15,000,000 annually. At 300K/year, you can own a heavily modded Z, paid for in cash, or something like a BMW M5 at most.
