Serious go-cart of a car, amazing fun but nothing like the Zed.
Take a testdrive as others have advised.
The Elise is a hardcore performance car that is difficult to deal with on a daily basis. Everything I've read says that it is basically a street legal racecar. I've talked to guys at autocrosses who have them and none have driven them daily. If this is what you're looking for, buy it. I wish I could.
The engine in an Elise is a 190hp Toyota not a Honda. I believe it evolved from the Celica GT-S engine. It weighs less than 2000 pounds, and can easily hang with a Corvette Z06 or a Viper in a track environment.

There was a turbo elise in Sport Compact Car. The shop was Modacar in Livermore CA. I had the pleasure to go for a ride in it. Like everyone says it is a go-cart. I don't like it. Im 5'7 and have a tough time getting in. I gave the owner a ride in the TT Z and he was amazed. The Lotus is all about balance, weight and finesse. I like grunt so I preferred my Z way more. I couldn't see driving that lotus everyday or on weekends.

We just purchased an 06 elise. Our other project car is a 94 rx-7. I can tell you that the Elise is simply amazing. The toyota engine feels and sounds completely different in this car.
Until you drive it, you may not get it. That article said they would have prefered a honda engine, and franky everyone would rather have more HP if possible, but the 1.8 is simply awesome in this car.
We are putting a turbo on it, but frankly it doesn't need one, it ran a 13.3 bone stock and 0-60 from 4.4 to 4.9 in all of the tests. Pretty damn fast and extremely fun to drive.
The exige is "better" for track racing, but the elise is better than just about anything else except the exige. In a straight line the elise is faster than the exige. The exige has 100 more lbs and the downforce is what keeps the exige planted during 100 MPH turns...that is where the elise starts to lift. that plays against the exige in a straight line and actually makes it a bit slower.

Just read a new issue of road and track and they pretty much say the engine suck " which they use honda " enging instead. And this reviews is done on an Exige which is better than Elise. But again if you like track car for road use, then go for it.
My real life example is that a guy i know got one, he called "James Bond's car", and about 2 months of owning it...drive it like once or twice a week. He sold it...don't ask why.

yeah if this is just going to be a track or a weekend car an Elise can be sweet(if its what you want) but if it is going to be anything close to a daily driver then forget about it. it is the all time worst daily driver ever. any wreck whatsoever results in almost complete destruction of that car.

i guess that's true since the elise's aluminum frame is bonded together by super strong industrial glue...not welded.
