Default Top Replacement Update

This one had a lot of discussion a year ago, but not much lately.

Anyhow, my '04 (early build model, old style "single stitch" top) seam split in the same place others experienced pinholes - the passenger side upper rear corner. Never had any holes or chafing, the seam stitching just separated at the corner where the panels meet. Dealer said today they would replace it under warranty, no problem.

Thought I'd pass this along, since there's no actual service bulletin on it that I'm aware of, but some dealers recognize the problem are are doing the right thing - even on the oldest roadsters.

Thumper,

When it was replaced the first time did you get the "newer" design or the same design as the old one? I've had two friends with '04 roadsters that got replacements and in both cases, the seams were different (different tuck and stitch). Theirs have held up great over a year + since replacement.

I just want to be sure to look for the difference and not inherit the same problem.

I am waiting for my 2nd top, according to the dealer the tops are on back-order. The stitching seperated on the passegner side the 1st time and now it is on the drivers side. I am pleased I purchased the extended warranty.

I've had two tops replaced. It takes about a year before the stitching seperates so I guess I will see next year.

FYI - you get a one year warranty on the top once its replaced, so if your an '04 and your 3 year warranty expires you still have some protection.

my 05 top is def separating on the back side - both driver/passenger back corners... 1.5 yrs old. so, i will be talking to the dealer to get it replaced.. it is not bad yet - but the stitching is starting to pull apart slightly. i will take some pics and post if anyone likes to see.

visionboy,

Pics attached. It's hard to see in these pics, but the separation is at the seam and the holes do go straight through to "daylight" inside the cockpit. It appears that whatever seam adhesive that may have been there in manufacturing let go, and the stitching just stretched after multiple top cycles until the seam holes elongated into gaps.

Hope this helps - let me know if if you need any more pics to make your case before I have mine fixed.

Has anybody used their extended warranty to replace the top? My 3-year warranty just ran out and I thought an extended warranty might be good protection for this issue.

But these warranties are not all they are cracked up to be (i.e. they are not simply an extension of the normal warranty and may not cover certain parts).

maxpowers,

I literally came in just under the wire on this. I looked at my purchase date and realized that it would have been three years TODAY that I bought it, so I made sure to take it in last week to document the top problem with the dealer.

I'm not saying they would have refused me beyond the three year mark, but I was intent to come in under the wire to make sure.

I didn't buy an "extended waranty" - as I recall, the one they pitched me at purchase was primarily for the power train and some cheesey teflon coating that I would pay extra to put on.

Nah.

Depends if your warranty is extended power train warranty or a bumper to bumper extended warranty... Bumper to Bumper warranty should cover it...

I meant the extended bumper to bumper, but they document many parts as not being covered if its a result of wear. I could easily see Nissan saying that after five years that a loose seem on the top is a wear item.
