Default question for the ZR owners...

I already performed several searches and didn't really come up with anything useful...so I'll just ask flat out...first a little background...
I'm on a waiting list for the Saturn Sky Redline...it's taking forever and I'm losing faith in the manufacturer...I've always liked the 350Z...but I want a convertable...

Would you buy your ZR again?... what trim level?... what are some of the in's and out's of having the Roadster?... please elaborate a little...feel free to post pics of your rides as well. Thanks for any input.

I have the Touring trim level, suits me perfectly. Would I buy it again? Abosolutely. Its a great looking car, very unique, especially in Le Mans Sunset. The Sky is a great looking car too, no doubt very fast in Redline trim, but still has a few flaws. For example, the trunk is basically non-existant with the top down, whereas in the Z (or a Miata for that matter) trunk space is always the same, top up or down, and its power to boot. I realize its kind of stupid to be arguing about something like trunk space with a roadster, where space is at a premium no matter what, but go take a look at a sky with the top down, not only is it difficult to access, the only space is at the very back, behind the giant gas tank intrusion. I was able to take my Z, and a friend, on a weekend trip to Montreal without space being a problem.

Is this going to be your only car? If its a second/weekend/fun car, then by all means, the Sky is a fine choice. If you need a little bit of utility, or this is your only car, I'd get the Z. The trunk is usable, the top is easy to put up and down (I love the looks I get when I put it down while waiting at a stop light), and the VQ motor is great for low-end torque, while still having mid-range power.

Hey Y....how can you say that you have no problems. On the other thread in the roadster forum...you said you took your Z in for a top replacement. That's not a PROBLEM?

I have an '05 ZR that is Pearl White and I absolutely love it. I can not think of one thing I dislike about it. On the other hand I have taken a close looks at the Saturn and what turns me off is the manual convertible top. I can decide in an instant that I want it down and do it in 30 seconds while waiting on the light to turn green - that can not be done with the Saturn convertible.
Other than that the Saturn is kinda cute but it does not compare to the Z.

I could not have said it better. Love my ZR. I'd buy it again and again. Another plus, the automatic convertible top. The Saturn is HOT. The ZR is HOTTER and more versatile.

lets see

i looked in the s2000 and the z4 and decided on the 350z cuz it was a little bigger. i didnt want to drive a car that was the size of miata. dont get me wrong i like the s2000 and z4, but i just felt that the 350z just looked more bad *** and meaner (and less cute)

the saturn sky looks cool, but when all is said and done, i have been making fun of saturns way too much in my life to ever get into one. <-- retarded reason i know. i just dont have respect for saturns. (esp those lame *** saturn commercials, "i would buy a bmw, but then i would have a slower car.")

would i purchase one again? thats a tough question. if i do purchase another convertible again, i hope it will be the caddy XLR. but if i wasnt going to purchase a car that cost 20g more, id definitely get the 350z.

not to sound lame or cheesy or anything, but when i drive around with my Z and the top down, i usually smile at how great and lucky my life has been.

Woudln't you rather just have a corvette convertable? I think I would. That XLR is really expensive, and with the hard top down, storage space in the trunk goes from minimal to non-existant. (I know, I keep harping on storage, I gotta have a place to put my stuff!).

You are right on here, no matter how bad life is, you start up the Z and put the top down, and everything is right in the world

i live in so cal, so corvettes are a dime a dozen. the XLR has this bad *** image to it. it just looks sharp in my opinion. dont get me wrong, id like a corvette too, but i just like the way the XLR looks. by the time i can afford that car (if it will still be in production) i dont think ill care about power (although i dont think its an issue in the XLR) or trunk space.

Thanks a bunch for all the input. I really appreciate it...as I said, I've always liked the looks of the Z (since I saw it as a concept car on Gran Tourismo 2)... as soon as I saw the Sky, I fell in love. There's a base model at the local dealership that I had a chance to sit in and get a feel for it...and I've driven a base model Solstice...I've got a pretty good idea of what I'm getting into...as for the trunk space...I seldom travel, so not much of a problem...and not having the automatic convertable top...the top on the Sky is unbelievably easy to put up and down. My concern now is that It'll take way too long to get the Sky and also, I'm worried about the longevity of GM..I fear that Saturn may go bye bye and then I won't be able to get parts...but damn I love the looks of the Sky. The safer and wiser alternative would probably be the Z. Thanks again for the input...I'll be making a decision within the next week or two...maybe giving myself a sweet birthday present next Wednesday. If I do, I'll be back with pics.

1. If you love the Sky, then buy it and don't settle for anything else. Otherwise you will always wonder if you had made the right choice.
2. You should feel lucky that you have to wait. NEVER buy version 1.0 of anything, including cars. Let someone else find the defects and fixed before getting yours. Unless, of course, you are the "someone else".
3. When the ZR first came out, there wasn't any to test drive or sit in. I see the Sky is the same. I waited 3 months before ordering mine and waited another 4 for it to show up. That was tough, but worth it.
4. I love this car to death. But like everything else, nothing is perfect. In this case, the soft top is giving a few of us problems. Other than that, it is a wonderful car.

Are looks the main factor here? I LOVE the looks of the Sky so I checked it out. I wanted to know if Saturn built a sports car convertable, or a Saturn convertable. Looks like a Saturn convertable. I don't have anything at all against the company, they just dont really stand out in any kind of performance catagory. One of the biggest thing is only 170hp on the Sky...the difference from that alone to a Z is immense.

On a postivie note, I love convertables, they have been my only driver since I had my first crappy Cavalier back in the day, my first 350 was a coupe and I missed having the top down so much I had to trade for my roadster, would do it again in a heartbeat. Simply the most fun vehicle I have ever driven.

Have you test drove a Satern sky? I think that they look great, but there just too slow. I test drove a Pontiac Solstice and it was way to slooooooow. for me. I ended up buying a 350z. Convertibles are nice but The extra weight that they bring is undesirable. I like the Elise at less than 2,000 lbs!

I also was going to buy a Satern and I was on the waiting list too. But what I really didn't like about the Satern is that there is no place to put anything, no trunk at all. I know the ZR has a small trunk but at least you have room for golf clubs or a small luggage.

The saturn is pretty cool looking, but it looks worse then the ZR with the top up... Saturn's own web page wont let you do a 360 view when the top is up only when its down LOL...

Yep, love mine. They're REALLY rare, you get tons of looks, and people understand and associate it with being fast and luxurious. When I hear/see/think about Saturn I get a bad impression, and I'm an informed car junkie. My friends and family who are not would be like, "What? You drive a Saturn?"

Not that vanity is all that important, but I'm a car junkie, and talk about cars a lot, so naturally I want a car that most people can attribute to being nice and pretty sporty.
