Default Should roadster owners buy extended warranty?

I was reading another thread and realized that around 50% of the roadster owners on this forum had to change their tops at least once during their basic bumper to bumper warranty. Some of you guys had to replace it even two or three times!! I'm estimating that when we are out of warranty, it will cost around $1,500 for the parts and another $1,000 for the labor so that is $2,500 to fix our soft top if it ever goes bad after the 3 years bumper to bumper. I got quoted by nissanextendedwarranty.com for a 7 year 100,000k mile warranty that covers the soft top for $1,500. I'm thinking that having that will guard against the failing window motors and the soft top. Would that be a smart investment?

If you plan on keeping the car longer than the factory warranty, then yes its a good idea! I have the 7 year/100K as well.

I've heard some folks say anything 'top' related may be difficult to get coverage as Nissan will point to the warranty not covering wear and tear (e.g. rips, threading etc.)

When I purchased my car I got the Security Plus Gold preferred plan to cover my car until 7 years75000 miles. I asked the Finance guy at the dealership if the top would be covered because that was the main reason I wanted to get the warranty. After being assured it would be cover I payed for it thinking I would not have to worry about the horror stories I have heard of the top wearing, ripping etc. Well last week I got the booklet in the mail and was very upset to read on page 5 section 8 undert he title what is not covered.

8.2 Paint, exhaust system, carpet, glass, upholstery, soft trim, weatherstripping, convertible soft top, and it goes on if you want the complete list let me know I will type it all out.

So now I am trying to get my money back and cancel my extended warranty plan and get back my $1800.

Ok I just got off the phone with the warranty people. Been trying to get ahold of them for a couple days now. Anyway what is covered is all of the metal/mechanical portions of the top. Just not the cloth portion. So I guess I will keep my over priced warranty.

If you get your top replaced within the standard warranty period, it is still covered for one year after install, even if the warranty expires before then. I had my top replaced last August. My warranty just expired but top still looks good as new so hopefully it will continue to hold up (or fall apart by next month )

I'm in the same boat as you. The new top still looks good though.

I bought an extended warranty from an outside company. It covers absolutely everything except for normal wear and tear items. The convertible motors are covered, but the top is not. You can buy a much better quality top from www.cabrioworld.com for $825 with the glass and it's cloth! Installation would be additional. My '04 that's out of warranty already has signes of the stiching seperating, but I will wait until it is a must. The car is mostly garage kept anyways, and the tops down when drivinig.
