Default Tears in 2005 convertible top

Within 5 days after buying the 2005 350Z, a 3 inch tear appeared on the top near a seam but not on it. At first thought it was vandalism but a local upholsterer said it was from age of top. A few days later a tear appeared in almost same spot on other side. Getting top replaced this week by a reputable shop. Concerned that the tears may have been caused by how the top is closing instead of deterioration. Worried may pay for new top and same thing happen to it. Thoughts? Will upholsterer be able to determine if tears were from age or how top is opening/closing?

If the elastic bands on the frame start to wear, that can cause the top to be pinched and tear. Make sure those are replaced too.

Thanks! That was the culprit - the elastic bands. Learning a lot the hard way.
