Default I want a new HU - can I just change that and leave the stock speakers?

The bose system sucks - I have been doing alot of reading on the site and know about the resistor mod etc. I dont think I have the upgraded amp and I dont have warranty anymore so my question is:

Can I just change out the headunit and leave everything else stock? Will this be an upgrade in sound (although minimal)

Is this fine or since the sub has a seperate (tiny) amp do I have to change anything else? I dont mind stock systems but this one is pretty bad and inconsistent so I just want to make it a tiny bit nicer.

Thanks

No, you cannot just change the HU.

If you do, your speakers will sound like ****. Bose uses a different OHM level with their amps and speakers.

I did. I bought and Kenwood DNX8120, which is pretty pricey, but has a HUGE amount of sound controls. Of course it won't ever sound as good as something with new speakers and mega-amps, but it still sounds a whole lot better than stock. There are cheaper models, that have less features, but the same sound controls.

That's exactly like how I want to do mine, rather I will be going with the DNX7120 more than likely. I mainly want the ipod functions and gps/navi.

I believe factory bose speakers are 2ohm rated speakers. I believe most if not all factory head-units are rated at 4ohm power.

Not true. If you get an HU with RCA outputs and get the proper harness, then it works fine. I did it and don't have any issues.

you can only replace the headunit, you have to get the pac roem nis-2 (model number from memory may not be exact, if you search and can't find it i'll get the exact model number for you) it converts the signal to the appropriate ohm or whatever rating for the stock bose amp, installation is real easy with it(even though i jacked mine up and had no sound for 4 days) major improvement over the stock bose HU and i can actually tell i have a sub in there now

yep, for an 03-05 z with Blose dash kit #99-7402 for 06 and up 99-7602

for the harness on your aftermarket headunit you need a metra 70-7550 so you can plus it in to your factory harness. and the PAC OEM1 is need to interface with the new deck if you keep the Blose speakers and amp.

Not true.

My 06 Grand Touring came with the sh!tty Bose System. The next day, i went and purchase an Alpine X100 HU. Hook it up like normal in every other car and the sound quality is actually much BETTER than stock Bose. It sounds like how the BOSE "supposed" to sound like. High and low bass were there. FYI i changed a few setting for the sound quality in the HU: Bass +5, Treble +7, Loudness: On.

I know the preamp signals from the HU going to the Bose preamp is NOT a good idea but If im keeping the volume low and dont crank it up too high, it will keep the Bose system from blowing up.

I'll keep this set up until the Bose decide to give out then its time to upgrade.

to the OP: Im getting a new Headunit next week so if you want to buy my Alpine X100 that is in MINT condition and used for 1 month, send me a PM. $250 shipped.

I used the Metra 70-7551, which uses the HU RCA jacks and nothing else. http://retailer.installationexcellen...hicleid=214046

For the record...

The BOSE ohm ratings are:

Fronts: 3-ohm
Rears: 8-ohm

IIRC that is...

Changing the HU OR the speakers will improve sound quality.

Change both the HU AND he speakers for best results.

You can pretty much buy yourself the cheapest set of Sony/Pioneer/Kenwwod
speakers, and get 100X better sound with a new HU. The BOSE speakers that come with your Z are sad...and cheap.

What are you switching to?
I switched from an X001, to X100.

Incorrect. Rears are 1.7 ohms. Fronts are 2 ohms with the tweets and mids together. Sub is 2 ohms. I measured them all today as I ripped everything out.

Factory Bose systems run anywhere from .5 ohms all the way to 4 ohms (A lot of Hondas run 4 ohm Bose). .5 ohms are gernerally reserved for Bose factory subs. The point is, Bose is a serious abomination of horrible sounding garbage and should not only be removed from your car, but doused with kerosene and lit on fire and damned to the depths of hell. Ok, thats just my opinion.
