Default Silly korean English teacher...

Alright,
I've been studying my @$$ off for a professional school entrance exam, and one of the curriculums they are testing on is English. So, just for the hell of it I'm taking this English course at a 학원 to get ready for the exam..

Just the other day, I took a practice exam and I got in an argument with the korean English teacher on some questions... Guys, answer these two questions for me, and let's see if I'm right or wrong..

"The idea that shorter work hours were a desirable outcome of progress was standard thinking among economists, politicians, and labor leaders at the turn of the century. Later, in 1956, Vice President Nixon, campaigning for President Eisenhower's re-election, predicted a four-day workweek and fuller family life for all Americans. In realty, the standard workweek has barely budged since the 40-hour, five-day week took hold in the 1930s.

But _______________ there were additional purely economic reasons for reducing the standard workweek? The idea is not far-fetched. In fact, many workers and managers sense already that working shorter hours could benefit corporate America as well as themselves. According to the U.S. New/Bozell poll, 60 percent of respondents, including 62 percent of the managers surveyed, say shorter work hours would give employees an incentive to be more productive on the job and would have little impact on the country's overall standard of living."

Question: Fill in the blank:
A: how come
B: what if
C: how about
D: whatever

Here is another one...

a) Next to AIDS, cancer is the most b) fearing modern disease. Yet the NTP by 1990 c) had identified only thirty agents d) as definitely causing cancers in human beings.

Question: Find a grammatical error from above.

B & B.

When you learn English in Korea, I've found that most people try to match the tenses first before seeing if the sentence as a whole makes sense.

Tell the 'tard that A ("how come") isn't even proper English and that it doesn't make sense with the rest of the paragraph. The second error can be understood, again, due to their nature to make sure all tenses agree with one another (which means that the first sentence of the second question be in 'present tense' and the second sentence would be 'past tense' - hence the confusion on his/her part).

BTW, why the hell are you wasting time/money (which I see isn't a problem for you seeing your car..) at a 학원? Shouldn't you be teaching them English?

Hahah~ If I wanted to make money, yes, but that's not my priority right now.. Also, some of the GRE, LSAT level vocabs and grammars are tough..

The answer is "what if". i don't even have to know the context, you cannot say "how about" without adding "if". "How come" doesn't work because the next sentence is "The idea is not far-fetched", suggesting that you have suggested an idea in the previous question.

The next one should be "d" because when you use "as" you must replace word with the same type of word. i.e. noun + as + noun. The statement should be "agents as causes of cancer".

Hope this helps!

Looks like the first one has been addressed quite well here. Let me shed light on the 2nd one in the simplest way your teacher may understand it. The reason it is B is because diseases aren't afraid of anything or anyone; they are the cause of such reaction among people. So cancer can NEVER be the "most fearing" modern disease; cancer isn't afraid of anything. It can, however, be the most fearsome, the most worrisome, the most intimidating etc.

I like how you updated your sig to make me look like some inexperienced rapist. Those 3 lines are taken completely out of context!

Sorry for being OT.
