Default I'm Modding My Ps2, More to come!

Hey guys, I have decided to mod my PS2. I am basically adding a 120 gig hard drive and will have the ability to load ps2 games and dvd's directly to it. I will post a how to if it works, and it will work.

Sorry for the teaser, just to let you know this is a very simple installation. Everything will fit inside the ps2 and NO soldering will be needed. The approximate cost will be about $130 to do($160 if you do not have a network adapter) The load times should decrease dramatically, and you will never have to switch discs again. My guess is that you could probably store 50+ games or movies directly to your PS2.

Sorry if it is old news, I never needed to do any of this until I installed a PS2 in my car.

You shouldn't need the mod chip if you are copying original PS2 games or DVD's. You only need it to play CDR's ond DVDR's.

You can format the hard drive with HD loader, put the hdd in your pc as a slave, and use HDL Dumb to copy the dvdr's over to the ps2 hdd and hdloader will be able to play the backups.

will that work with the regular hdloader, or only hdloader advance?

both, the software will play the backup game without being modded. The problem is the ps2 won't read the disk to copy it to the HDD. That's why you copy the files from a PC and play them in the PS2.

Update, I got a super deal on a 250 gig HDD. The software will only recognize the first 200 gigs, but that's more than enough. I am compiling my games as we speak. I am working out a way to copy DVD 9 games, I'm pretty sure Gran Turismo 4 could be a DVD 9 game.

you mean the new thin one? but then you can't use the hdloader because it requires the use of a network adapter and for a harddrive to go into the playstation.

Finally got it done, the HD Advance 2.0 program recognized my 250 gigs as 233 gigs. So far I have made time to install about 10 games to the PS2's new hard drive. Hopefully by the end of the month I will have enough time to load up all of my games(50+). This works great in my Z. I don't have to switch discs/smush passengers anymore, all I have to do is crack open the door(with the seat still reclined back and turn on the PS2/reset it to switch games.

my best friend does this type of modding as well, but for xboxs instead of PS2s. He does it without a mod chip, no soldering, installs harddrives that can do all sorts of crazy things. He usually sticks a 250gb harddrive, stores over 100 games + all the old arcade classics. Pretty cool stuff, PM me if youre ever interested in having him mod one for you, hes got a business going.

Here's a quick write up.

1. First go to best buy and get a network adapter and an internal hard drive. (the hard drive can be 40-250 gigs, make sure it is an ide hard, drive not sata. Buy a Maxtor, they fit perfectly and they work. 9Beware of seagate and western digital)

2. Order this software disc......
http://www.modchipstore.com/PS2_HDAd...c-p-16188.html

3. Set the hard drive jumper to master. If you don't know how to do this, look in the owners manual.

4. Connect the network adapter to the IDE and power connections on the hard drive. The maxtor hard drive will match up perfectly.

5. Slide the hard drive/network adapter into the expansion bay on the back of the ps2. Tighten the two screws on the network adapter to hold it in place.

6. Insert the HD Advance disc and turn on the PS2, the software will ask you if you want to format the drive, click yes and your done.

Note: Only convert ORIGINAL games that YOU own to the hard drive. Anything else you copy over to it is considered piracy and therefore is ILLEGAL.

I have HDLoader and everything works like alininger2001 mentioned above except for the following:

1) The only size hard drives that it supports are 40-140GB. I heard that HDLoader and HDAdvance are very similar but I don't know if HDAdvance has a limit or not (may alininger2001 can verify this for us).

2) I only buy Maxtor hard drives because I had a very bad experience with Western Digital. Make sure you check the software's website for a list of compatible hard drives.

I have hd advance 2.0, it says it only recognizes up to 200 gigs, but it recognized my 250 gig HDD(It doesn't seem to have a limit). Any maxtor drive that is IDE should work, I beleive they are all compatible. The list on their website is composed of user posts and is not very comprehensive.
Western digital hard drives won't fit into the connectors on the network adapter, don't even try using one of those.
