Default Can a modded ps2 play mp3s?

I was going to put a modded xbox in my car so i could use it ONLY for playing mp3s or an occasional DVD/video file in my car. After reading that Playstation 2s now can be hooked up to a hard drive i was looking into getting one because they tend to sell for a whole lot cheaper than xboxs and are easier to find.

If i wanted to play games id get the xbox but ALL i want is mp3s and maybe some videos so thats why i figure i could save some cash.

After reading around i havnt seen anyone say anything about playing mp3s with their ps2s and i read that in stock form the ps2 cannot save mp3s or play them with a hard drive.

Anyone know how to get around this/ what i need to do it?

Thanks,
Alex

I haven't figured it out yet. There is only one media player around for the ps2. It can be installed on the hard drive but it can't read from it. To use it would be a real p.i.t.a.

the ps2 is more of a game console as opposed to the xbox which at the time was a modest computer that played video games.

you can use the gameshark media player to play them, but that loads the files from a computer connected through the network adapter, so you would have to have a computer set up in the car as well.
In other words, not convenient.
