I did that with mine too. But can still notice a difference with them on..in rich vocals, a little rattling too. I'm looking for something cloth based.

If you find it (or create it) let us know. I've not listened without the grills so I'd certainly be interested in something like that. Hey! How about a CF grill?

i checked out secondskin audio after you told me about the sprectrum a while back

it was just too expencive to get the stuff shipped here.. there are a few brands here that i am going to try *the liquids*
if these are really bad, i think i will just order from secondskin and pay the expencive shipping

the foam isnt a problem i have got some at home which is sound/heat proof
3/4 inch foam

hopefully it will make my ride better

also to you guys that have the tweeters positioned down near the woofer

how does that affect the sound, like if you have a passenger can they hear the drivers tweeter that well?
i would imaging the drivers legs would muffle the sound a little bit ?

yes / no ?

i never thought about putting the tweets down low before ?
im guessing it sounds good if a few of you guys have done it..

There are real audio benefits to putting the tweeters down near the mids. This is documented by numerous manufacturers (JL, BA, CDT etc). For one, you want to get the tweets as near to the same distance from both ears as you can (and as far away). In the stock location, the left tweet is much closer to your head than the right. You also want to get the axis of the mid and tweet close to each other, which basically means within 8" of the mid or mounted on the mid (braxial). When I seperate the tweet from the mid by a great distance, I can hear the seperation.
If you are pushing 100W+ per channel it doesn't matter who is in the car or where their leg is. Having the tweets in the upper forward section of the kick panel and aimed up towards the dome light will sound best IMO. The highs will likely be so overbearing, even at that location, that you will likely have to set your Xover to -3+db or use an EQ.
Regarding acoustic foam Zed, I think other companies make a similar liquid to spectrum, I can't remember the manuf, but they mention it also goes on purple and dries black. I coated the entire inside of the car and the wells, and then threw a layer of 1/4" neoprene over all surfaces inside. I only used the 1/2" open cell acoustic foam in areas where there was enough clearance (behind plastic side panels, inside the trunk and behind seat cubby area, and under seat and feet. One other product that seemed to work well was Vibramat from an Ebay store. You cut it into pieces and apply it to the recesses of the hood. Sort of a lightweight hoodliner. You may have a problem using 3/4" foam, if you put it under the carpet it will puff up too high

yeah the foam issue being too fat, i think you may be right, it will go in some spots, but others i think i will definatly have issues, wont know untill i do it i guess, i am planning on doing my car during the easter break.
the liquid i have bought is called *sound off*, designed to do the same as sprectrum, i just hope it works as well

as for the tweets, i will definatly give it a go down there, because they sound pretty bad in the stock position,
i do notice that most high end installs *in car mags n stuff* the tweeters are positioned down next to the woofer

i have the eclipse splits with adjustabe crossover ..
so the volume will be an easy fix

i dont know why no one on this forum is using eclipse speakers..
and to my understanding they are the only brand that have adjustable crossovers

i bought mine for $400 AUD which is about $300 US,
i guess there are better out there, and you US guys have a bigger range of stuff

thanks for all the feedback

Thanks Bixby. You're right, audio tech stuff is pretty boring and complicated. The best test is sitting in the car and being blown away by the music.

I wish they still made 350z in Brickyard. Best color

I'd buy their kick panels if they made them for the Z. But would want to fill it with 4" and 1" tweeter.

not boring at all!!!

As to the kick panels:

I ran them for a while and have since moved my coaxils to my doors and stuck a 9 inch mid bass driver in the kicks. Heheh imaging suffered a little bit but I think I can tune it to sound as good or better than before.

Damn! where are your kick panels? Nice job, I was doubting the ability to install them in front back when you first brought up using them but you're doing it.

I've been pissed lately. had to uninstall everything from my driver door to help a dent fixer guy get out some door dings. Word of caution about using too much Dynamat on your inner door panels..some day you may need to strip some of it off because of access to screws, and window adjustment bolts ;-(((

Well looks good. You will get crazy bass now from the front and back.
Watch out taking the inner panels completely off the door. It's hard to reallign the window afterwords. The screw/bolt combination on the bottom adjusts the window inward/outward to make a proper seal with the weatherstripping. Mine got jacked up and I had serious wind noise for awhile until I could take it all apart again.

Another weird thing I learned is that the entire lower lenghth of the outer door panel is covered in a heavy duty dampener like material that aint coming off. You can see part of it behind the 6.5 cutout. And above this in the middle of the door is a metal tube for crash protection. So if you have a ding behind either of those forget about paintless dent removal. Luckily mine were between the dampener and the tube structure.

Have a good one
