Thumbs down Viper 690VX Responder, POS.. messed up remote.

I have a Viper 690VX on my Z for almost 2 years, over the past 2-3 month, I have been experiencing intermittent malfunction with my key fob remote. The remote was never dropped or abused. Anyhow, I stopped by my local DEI dealer and they tell me that while the Alarm has a lifetime warranty, the remote only has a 1 year warranty. Furtheremore, he said that DEI has had a lot of problems with the 2way alarm remotes!

Has anyone experienced similar problems with their Viper Responder remotes?
How much did it cost you to get it replaced.

The white remote has reliability problems. The new blue remote is better, but the battery cover falls off. Pick up a new blue remote off ebay, it works with your alarm. Many people at http://www.the12volt.com/ complain about the old remote.

yeah, the Viper two way remotes are junk. They have been since they first came out with them. Every year they try to make them better, but fail miserably. Its rather ironic, Audiovox's two way remote is awesome, but the alarm itself sucks. If you could pair the Audiovox 2 way remote with the Viper alarm brain we would have a killer alarm system!

I've had my two-way viper alarm on my Mountaineer for like 2 years and the remote hasn't given me any problems yet. The thing eats batteries up though. What is your remote doing that its giving you a problem?

I too have the 690vx Viper installed on my G35 Coupe...when I had my unit installed I purchased a back-up two transceiver, good thing I did because the one I used the most all of a sudden started to malfunction...not able to arm/disarm on occasion etc.

Thanks for all the feedback. I am a bit pissed that now I have to spend $90 to get a new remote (upgraded design with a blue casing). Anyone had success to get DEI to pay for their replacement alarm. Congressman Issa should pay more attention to the POS that his company is putting out.

One more thing. I found an online source for a replacement remote. How easy is it for DIY programing? Do I need a BitWriter?

You can program the remote through the Valet switch, you don't need a bitwriter, in fact, you can't program it with a bitwriter, you can only change programming options.

Thanks! I assume this is something an alarm newbie like myself can tackle?

As long as you have the manual it will be easy. If I remember right, you have to have the door open, turn the ignition on, and then press the valet button X amount of times (there is an auto learn number, but it changes from alarm to alarm). When you get to the last press you hold it down, the alarm will beep x amount of times and then you hit the button on the remote.

Of course, its been almost 2 years since I have messed with DEI alarms so my info might be a little wrong.
