That is correct. You do not need to give your subwoofer its rated power in order have it be totally controlled and protected though. A good amount of power with ample reserve is what you should have. You basically want to avoid hard clipping on the amplifier, which can be very destructive to drivers.

Good rule of thumb, buy a more powerful amp, and turn the gains down.
