is it true that you can't hook up the unit so that it will play a DVD while the car is moving? I heard you need a "special program" to bypass that.

 

From what I was told the answer it true. With the AVIC-N2 it won't play DVD's while the car is moving, and it can't be bypassed. I heard that with the AVIC-N1 it was possible to watch DVD's while in motion, but don't know for sure because I have no experience with that unit.

 

Don't have my MP3 CD's @ this time. I left them in another car last night and probably won't see them again for a couple days. I will be sure to check it out when I can and let you know.

 

The N2 cannot be bypassed to play DVDs while driving, the N1 does with no problems.

 

Really, I talked to a guy from Tweeter, and he said it's possible to bypassed N2, he said he installed one and it play dvd while in driving.

 

That would really sux if it can't play dvd while driving. Wonder if it's an easy mod to make it work.. Any more info from the Tweeter guy on how to do it?

 

I'd like to known forsure as I've also read that the gyrocompass/velocity sensor is connected to the circuit to prevent DVD watching.

I have questions for Steve, how does the navi get new roads update, do you have to buy a new navi disc, or can you download for pioneer?

Do you have Pioneer iPod interface, how is it? I heard it bad, you can't search for songs.

 

I registered my purchase with Pioneer on line. They are suppose to alert me via e-mail and web site update as to when and how to get updates when they become available. I don't use an iPod so I can't answer that question.

An easy way to watch dvd while driving with avic-n2, is to get a seperate screen. It doesn't cost much, and it possible to have dvd and nav at same time.

 

That's true.. you can install the avic-n2 on the original stereo space, and install another 7" screen in the original navagation compartment. that way you keep the navagation and dvd screen on at the same time..

 

BTW where did you by your n2 and how much.

I have another question, does the n2 have time correction like alpine's HU, to me, a very nice feature, and it make a big difference in sound quality and clearness.

 

I have a question, if you get a DVD changer added to this HU, can you place the NAV DVD in the changer so its always accessible, and use the HU to play DVD movies?

I plan to put the rear monitor in the cubby hole and do not want to have to unload a movie DVD everytime I want to plot a new path, I'd rather be able to leave the NAV DVD in the changer and not have to interrupt a movie/CD.

The reasoning is I hate flying and my wife says get a DVD player and we can drive long trips instead of flying, so I would like both NAV and DVD to work at the same time without flipping disks around.

A suggestion ... why not put a DVD changer in the "cubby" behind the seats, and use it exactly as that (a DVD changer). This way you will never interfere with the Nav-DVD in the N2 and you will have over the shoulder access to 6 different movies. If it is your wife watching the movies, then the turning around to load them shouldnt be a problem at all.

This is what I plan on doing with my Avic-D1, since it can't even play DVD at all. Just us it as a reciever/pre-amp and let the DVD changer do everything else ... never even touching the nav.

 

Finally got some quick pictures. Sorry for the crappy angles and lighting, but I kinda rushed the shots. The last pic is a little washed out due to the flash. As you can see, I think the installation looks great. I forgot to get one of the unit all closed up in the dash, I'll try for one of those tomorrow. I just installed the pioneer avic-d1, the double din version of the N2, with the ipod interface unit. The interface is not seamless like the alpine interface, but it's really very nice. I can go through my playlist, search for songs, scan through tracks with the little toggle switch. I almost like it better than the navigation. I'm really a newbie with the navigation, but so far the screen looks great, user friendly functions and lots of little tools. My friend has an E46 M3 with navigation and he really likes the pioneer unit alot. My only beef with the D1 is that it's not a perfectly flush fit with the rest of the dash, so i'm going to have to customize some sort of frame.

btw, the D1 cannot play dvds..the only drawback. I really didn't like the N2, along with being $300 more expensive, the screen is very floppy, especially when you use the touch screen it just bounces back and forth, where as the double din screen is solidly anchored with the option to angle the screen (can't angle the N2 screen). It only has one slot for dvd and cd/mp3. The only upside is that it plays dvd media.
