Image Dynamics or Phoenix Gold woofers???
I was hoping someone could help me out here. I am trying to decide between:
1 X Image Dynamics ID MAX 10 v.3 D2
or
2 X Phoenix Gold Xenon X10D4
The one ID or two PG 10's will be installed in the common under strut bar off of ebay (you know the one). I want sound quality but also be able to thump when I crank it up.
My amp is the MB quart's 1000X1 @ 1ohm. My guess is that the Phoenix Gold's will get a little lower, from having two woofers rather then one. But, I hear nothing but great things about the ID MAX's.
Thanks for any input you audio enthusiast can provide...

What do they sound like to YOU?
What do they sound like with YOUR music?
What do they sound like with the loudness YOU play YOUR music with?
-- Not trying to be a smart @ss but speakers are things that YOU pick out with YOUR music, with YOUR ears, in YOUR car. Changing the music, the listener, and the car can make the world of difference - there is no simple measurement or reading one can put on to any of those most important things.
If you listen to rap music you're one sort of "music" listener, if you listen to classical - or non-electric music you're another. I want to teach you to listen to music with your ears and buy equipment based on what impresses your ears - if you buy with your eyes (bling-bling) you're ears will suffer. If you buy something to impress me or another you'll have to live with a system that is (hopefully) chosen for the music I listen to.
Personally I enjoy listening to accurate music rather than bass with +24 dB of boost. Using moderately efficient speakers I find that I can fill my 1200 sq.ft. living room to SPL levels loud enough to make conversation impossible at just a handful of RMS watts. My home's amplifiers are rated at a very conservative 35WX4, 200Wx2, and 360Wx2. The later two are the mains and the subwoofer/center amplifiers - none of which ever see 10-12W worth of use to produce sound levels above 100 dB.
I haven't replaced the head end on the Z to install external amps but I'm looking at a set of three Zapco amplifiers that will run about 50W into each of the channels which ought to run my speakers up to about 112 dB which is an insane level to subject your ears to on purpose.
The cool thing about destroying your hearing is that it is forever. Music "lovers" destroy the very thing that gives them the music that they love. Each exposure to extreme music levels has a measured amount of destruction to the ear - that will never ever return.

Thanks man, that was 100% no help, why even post? If I had access to the IDMAX's I would go for a listen. I went to listen to some PG's but they didn't have any of the new stuff. Just because they sound one way in a store doesn't mean they will sound anything like that in the Z. Thus, I was asking here, to see what others advice was...
If I were interested in the stuff they sell at best buy I would go for a listen. Because I want some better stuff they don't sell in every corner of the country I am asking for a little advice. Thanks for the 2 cents, but take your crappy home amplifiers answer somewhere else.
I value my hearing greatly, thats why I won't listen to prolonged high SPL levels dad. I just want the ability, to, if I WANT TO, crank it up a little (just, for never longer then 15 mins at a time).
Well if anyone has any meaningfull information they want to add please post.

Way to go Karmstro, that was a smart *** comment to a informative and well intentioned post. It sounds to me like it doesnt matter what sub you get because youll just crank the hell out of it and drown out what little mids and highs that you might have in hopes that everyone seeing you bump down the road will think you are cool.
do yourself a favor and run a line out from the stock head unit to three 1000watt MTX amps with a Cerwin vega stroker 15 and stop asking questions that you wont like the answers to.

Ive played guitar in a few metal bands for years and my hearing is really shot, and looking back I wish I would have been a little more conservative and listened to my "daddys" advice about constant exposure to loud music, because needing hearing aids when i turn 35 isnt something that Im going to be looking forward to.
wtf, I know car audio guys. I am just choosing to upgrade my subs first because I have an amp to do it with. Later I will follow suit with the fronts and maybe HU. Sorry, I just think I asked a really simple question (what sub do you guys like better). Why do I want it to get loud? Because it is fun for me at times to pump up the volume. Why did I choose a car with close to 300 hp if I am not going to use it at every stop light? Because when I want the power it is there.
Paul said nothing informative to my question. He talked about his home audio system and a little about amps he is getting for his Z. Both of which I already have. He also told me to go listen to them, which is good advice. But, there arn't any stores to my knowing that carry those subs around here.
I am not a bass head Tackett, however I do listen to rap from time to time. Sorry if I am not up to your refined taste either...

Look man whats your deal. I am not one of those guys who goes booming down the street. What do I want? I want some or a nice sub that gets down low and won't fall apart when I give it some power. Am I going to use 1000X1 or 500X2 very often? I will probally never have it that loud!! But amps play alot cleaner at half power to 2/3 power then they do at max. Would you like me to get a lesser sub for my high powered amp? I just don't get it. Why would you click on my thread in the first place. My title spells out what my question is. Doesn't seem like you have any usefull input so leave it alone. I am very carefull with my ears, havn't been to a loud concert in years and never listen to loud music in my car for over 15 mins at a time.
Looking at your system there are some things I wouldn't have (ie NEON) but I understand that some how that makes you feel cool and thats fine by me. To each his own. Don't make a post just to make a post. This is a site for information...

sorry for biting your head off dude. Sometimes I attack people who seem to come out swinging at people who are making good natured posts. There have been so many people out there who ask the exact same question you just did wanting to know which one would be the loudest so they can umm "pimp out the volume." and it really gets my goat. And I wasnt making a post just to make a post, i was making a post to make a point. I tend to strike out at people who do things because other people like it and not because they like it. I have neons because I like them, not because other people like them and think I am cool which I assure you, I am far from being. I assumed that you were asking those same questions and automatically placed you in one category. For that, I am sorry.
So to answer your question to the best of my ability:
I would not buy a damn thing from PG at this point. The Xenon amps suck, and the xenon subs I heard blow also. They are loud, but they just dont have the accuracy that other subs in that price range do. It is so sad to see a company go from putting something out as nice as the tantrum and titanium series go down the drain. I would wait untill their financial status starts going up (if it ever does) before I buy anything from them again.
The ID subs that I have heard have been very nice. They are priced well, seem to have good craftsmanship and can get extrememly loud. The only thing I dislike about them is that they are UGLY. For better or for worse and what it actually means is inconsequencial, however it is their only weak point.
My opinion, go with ID. Phoenix is circling the drain.

DUDE PERFECT!! Thats all I wanted, lol.
A good mix between SPL and SQ, looks don't really matter to me that much. Being that I take the metro, I won't be driving the car but a few times a week. For long trips I will take the box out to recoop some trunk space. So, hearing loss is not really a factor. Just want a good sub!!!
This is my first thread and I was hoping just to get an answer rather then a discussion about hearing loss and how bad rap sucks.
Thanks for the informative post finially!! I had read that PG has been having some problems. Theirs subs just require very little box volume which is nice for those ebay boxes.
Was just giving you a hard time on the neon, glow on!!!

Again, sorry man. Was having a bad day, no excuse to take it out in the forums. Boom on!!
and its not that the xenons are that HORRIBLE. They just can't compare to the IDMAX in any way shape nor form. I wouldnt waste my money on it.
welcome to the 350z forums brother, will give you better answers next time.

Tackett, I have found a few Ti Phoenix Gold subwoofers on the internet various places. They are able to handle like 450 Watts a piece, making them perfect for my amp!! They will work for a small box and are around 130 a piece or so. What do you think about those? I know they recieved good marks!!!
The sub box off of e-bay puts the two 10 inch subs in a .75 cubic ft box. Thus I really need subs that do well with small boxes.
I would love to get the W3v2, great price!! But I think they require a bit more box. I would get these in a second if JL said they would work in a box that small. Looks like the W6v2 would work fine in the ebay box. Only problem is the price.. I guess I could get one now and get one later. I have the money, just hard to justify to myself dropping that much on subs. Let me know what you and everyone else thinks??
BTW The W7 is too deep as is the ID MAX for the box. I would have to mount them backwards. I would rather not do this.. But, would if need be
Thanks guys!!!

Then there are always the Elemental Designs, which are the right price and can be used in a small box. Just don't know much about them.

thanks for the input!!!
sorry for the long wait before the reply man. If you can find the Ti phoenix series subs for cheap go for it. Ive heard a bunch of those and they kick freakin ***. I heard that alpine type R sub not too long ago and was not impressed with it AT ALL. Its overpiced IMO.
dont get a cadence either. Im taking my striker back tommorrow.
JL is my next sub I think. Im tired of this crap.

I am really leaning towards Elemental Designs now. They should have really good SQ and even the SPL I am looking for. Plus a three year warranty!!! Just wish I had them side to side with the PG ti's and JL...
oh well, have to make up my mind soon....

I had 1 12"IDMAX in my '02 IS300 powered off a JBL 1200.1 and it hit very hard and very clear. Everyone that heard it could not believe the sound was coming from just 1 woofer.
I want to figure out how to get it to fit into my new roadster...
