IMO, the stock stereo is one of the worst I have ever heard..When I got my Z in Oct, I was planning on upgrading the system in the spring, however, it found itself in the stereo shop on its 4th day of life. I drive alot and I could not take it. I would actually just turn it off. Here is a list of my upgrades....

Polk DX 6.5 serperates in the front-200
Polk DX 6.5 coaxials in the rear- 90
Kicker 10"L7dvc4ohm sub- 190
Kicker KX700.5 5 ch amp- 400
Custom enclosure for sub- 200
Dynomat-all speakers & sub- 100
Lightning Audio cables & convertor-0
Now being added, 1farad cap- 100
Labor, (got good deal from shop)- 480
Total-------------------------------------$1760.00

Originally sub was going behind drivers seat but would not fit. Now it is in a custom enclousure in the spare tire well..Next upgrade may be to a good head unit for arounf 300, but it still sounds super clean going through the stock head.....

I actually don't like the sound of the stock head unit. It obviously has some type of auto-loudness feature or maybe just a simple protection circuit for high volumes. As roberto350z pointed out, the bass changes volume relative to the music at different settings.

The thing that's driving me crazy is the peak at around 3kHz. Both Rob and I have noticied it - S's and cymbals are incredibly sibilant and harsh. Since there was no crossover for the stock speakers, all I can figure is that this was done in the head unit somehow.

I'm in the process of adding a McIntosh 6 CD changer + display control for the head unit portion, mounted in the NAV compartment. That way I can keep the stock look but lose the stock sound.

Hopefully it will help...

The MB Quart Speakers are great IMHO. Some may say they are too "bringht" and harsh but I love it. They are among the clearest speakers you will ever hear.

Does anyone know if you can just pop out the grill on the front speakers to take them out? Or do I have to take the whole door panel off to get to the speakers? How about the rear speakers?

I have some 6.5 infiniti's from my old car that i want to put in, but am just kinda blank on how i might go about doing it.

Im not sure but I think most shops rip off the doors. Besides if you are changing your components you want to change the speaker wire as well. I always go by this motto, "your system will only be as good as its weakest link"

Image Dynamics IDMAX 12". It's extremely tight and "dry". I *love* it, and it wins lots of SQ competitions (the speaker, not mine specifically... yet). roberto350z thinks it's really good but not his favorite because it lacks "boominess". I would say it's outstanding for rock, jazz, and classical, but only above average for rap.
