NAV operation with standard DVD player
I have read that the DVD used for the NAV system can't be used for DVD movies because it doesn't have an MPEG decoder...
It looks like all the mods tried so far include using a second DVD player.
My question is.. will a standard DVD player run the NAV DVD so that I could replace the NAV DVD player with a 'standard' DVD player?
Wouldn't this be a simpler / cleaner mod (if it would work) ?
The only drawback I see is that the NAV system wouldn't be functional while playing DVD movies.
Any thoughts ?
Has this been tried ?
Thanks in advance
George

I think that the answer is maybe. It depends on what DVD player you use. Most standard car DVD players have composite outputs. Nav DVD players (including the one the Z) have RGB outputs. RGB is required for higher resolution. A composite video nav unit would be much harder to read. You could probably replace the Z DVD with an aftermarket DVD unit that was also MPEG compatible, but now you're talking big bucks and a lot of wasted money on the factory nav unit.

Why don't you take the nav dvd and try to play it in a dvd player with rgb jacks. If that works I don't see why we can't replace that with the nav dvd, it has to be cheaper than the nav-tv set up?
