Default Temping to put 2 12s and 2 8s...

what you guys think? overkilling the z with sounds system? 2 12s goes right where the spare tire are located and 2 8s right under the strut bar... its possible. 2 12s - IDQ and 2 8s 8w0.

Wouldn't the 12s just overtake the 8s? Would it really be helpful to have those extra 8s?

If I were considering this, here's what I'd do...

*Two 12's in the hatch
*Two 8's up front (one in each door for midbass purposes)
*Components in the kick panels
*Forget the rears

8" in the doors would also be my advice. But I don't know of anyone who has successfully done that. hell, just getting decent quality 6.5s in there is a pain considering depth. Now if there was a qay to cut off a chunk of the bottom front of the windows you could probably...

As much directional music coming from the kicks as possible..door for mid-bass, rear for 12's!

I've got 2 dynaudio 7's in the doors, and two more in the rear. Two 12" PPI flat piston subs in the spare location. It has great mid-bass, really important for good quality. The 12"s don't drown out the 7's at all.

dynaudio 3-way, so a 3" mid, and a 1 1/2 (?)" tweeter. I think it's one and a half anyway. Right now my headunit sucks though so it's not perfect yet. You have any suggestions for a high quality HU. I was considering the new Kenwood 8015, with 5volt preouts, but it's hard to not immediately think about eclipse when I think of high quality. Others that compare?

You are a smart man.. I totally agree with keeping the mid-bass only in the doors and putting the directional highs (3" and tweets) in the kicks (that is where you have them right?) Did you make custom kicks? Are the tweeters rotational? I just blew out one of my PG comps, I'd love to look into a 3-way set like you have.

Kenwood, eh.. I have the Excelon 879 w/ a supposed 5V 6ch preout signal. I hooked it into a PG 215i EQ/Line driver and the signal is actually much lower on average. All of the amps I've ever attached to the HU require a lot of gain. So I think the final verdict if you are looking for max voltage is using a line driver.

Yeah, as you suspected I built custom kicks for the 3's and tweets. First time Id ever built kick panels, the building wasn't bad, turned out pretty good. Many a messy day in the garage with fiberglass, bondo, and then what felt like an eternity to sand. I covered with leather, and that didn't turn out quite as perfect so i have to redo. The tweets are not rotational, so i spent a bit of time lining them up in the car, I used string to represent the line from the tweeter to my ear when in the car.
I saw a set for like 670.00 on ebay the other day, I unfortunatly bought them from a shop and paid like 1 grand for the 3ways, and another 199 for each of the rear sevens. They are not bright, if you crave treble you'll want focal's or something like that. The mid-bass from the 3 way's alone is outstanding. They are by far my favorite purchase for the car. Worth every penny.

I've seen them on the Dynaudio website and on Ebay a couple times. The 7" drive actually looks very similar to the P/G Elites (Morel) I have which also have a warm feeling. The Diamond Audios I had were bright. I have the tweets in the kicks too. Only I just cut holes and used the directional ability of the tweets to aim towards the dome light. Only thing That has prevented me from going three way in the past was probably the lack of pre-made kicks on the market.

I like the fact that your set also has a high power handling capability, 200W RMS I believe right?

Flat piston subs huh? I went with a 5.5" depth MB Quart single 12" What do you have drving the 12's?

hmmm.. instersting design wth the mid and tweeter as one unit. I wonder if other manufacturers will follow. Just makes sense to me to put the true mid-bass in the door..blasting into your knees and the mids and highs in the kicks directed towards the listener. Awesome find WhiteZed.

has anyone mounted a 3-way system with the midrange and midbass in the door? Do you guys thing this can be done? and would it be better. I'm wondering this because I want some of the tweet to reflect off the windshield to improve imaging.

My advice is the higher the frequency the more directionally dependant it will be. Also keep all components of the set near each other and aimed somewhat in the same direction.

The stock door location is knee level. Mounting anything else in the door will mean cutting holes. Highs are lost because the drivers are set so low. Tweeters and mids in the kick panel can be better directed to your ears. If you are looking for imaging, try some ambient tweeters in the stock location set at 8.5k and up (Boston Neo).

my original intent was to line up the midbass midrange and tweet on the same plane on the door, but I guess if the tweet is aimed up at the windshield a bit that would be wrong anyways.(where the pillar meets the windshield) Another reason I was wondering was because the tweeters I was planning to use are infinity emit ribbon tweeters. I was worried about legs blocking the tweeters. These tweeters sound great but are easily muffled. How about using another tweeter and using the emits like the Boston Neos you recommended.

i think to do anything properly in the zed you will need some pretty serious cutting and modding which to most people isnt worth it..

i played with my tweets down low in the kicks, and as good as it sounded, i got a bit annoyed with passanger legs interfering with the levels...

i put my tweets on the dash pointing up at the interior light.... IMO the sound just as good as down low, i had to get the angling perfect though, i cant hear the seperation with woofers.
heaps better than the stock pod position anyway.. that was a crappy spot for tweets

but to do some 3 way installs ???
i couldnt imagine one going smoothly...

good luck if you do decide

Everybody has different taste and expectations when installing. Although a higher location is more feasible/less work, my insistence that everything be as perfect as possible lead me to the kick panels. I built something very similar to another person on this site (Nazal, or something close). Having a person on the passenger side does diminish the sound a slight amount, to correct I just turn up the volume!
