Default door panel speaker grills

was wondering has anyone done anything wtih the speaker grills in the doors since they only have about half of the holes cut out?

I was thinking of cutting the rest of the holes out but then i thought to myself that it might look weird and what if i mess up. Is there any other solution (besides leaving them off?)

i figured with only half the wholes cut out that it would affect sound quality... I dont know why nissan did this (maybe to hide the bad sound quality of the stock system? ? ? :P)

Thanks for any help or ideas about it. Im sure some of you have done something with the factory stock speaker grills in the doors.

Many people here have used a dremel to route them out. I bought a special bit about 1/16" if I remember right to do it. Will not look perfect but better than stock.

I leave mine off.

Yep. Drill out the "fake" holes. I can't believe Nissan did that. But since the factory unit sounds like crap I guess it didn't matter.

The fake holes are actually a Nissan "Feature", so you can't here just how crappy the stock system sounds :-0

I cut the entire center section out. I was left with about a 3/4 inch frame of the grill all the way around, so it still kept the shape of the grill and the mounting clips. All I did after that, was cover it in black grill cloth and it looks stock. I will post pics tonight. Just so you get a ideal the entire center section of the grill is gone, but it looks like one piece when it is covered with the grill cloth.

EXCELLENT IDEA DUKE! I thought about doing that but was worried that the grill cloth would not conform to the weird curviture of the remaining grill. Post a pic please!!!

Well, the reason all the holes aren't cut out is because the speaker is so low in the cut-out anyway. All the holes in front of the speaker go all the way through.

With MDF spacer you can offset/raise the speaker 1" up and a bit back to better align with the hole. This is why I like Duke's idea..because otherwise I ride around with no covers.

Here are the pictures with the grill on and off. I also took a picture of the back of the grill so you can see what was cut out.

did you just use spray adhesive on the grillcloth? I thought about this but was worried about how to attach the cloth to the frame of the speaker cover without making a mess.

Looks awesome!

Yes, All I used was spray adhesive. Also make sure when you put the cloth on you strech it or else it will have wrinkles in it.

I've never had good luck with the spray adhesives..even 3M #90. Maybe it's the heat around here but it never seems to stick for long.

my install is being built atm, and i had the installer drill out the holes as well

he spent a good hour on both despite telling me it was going to be a waste of time. It wasnt until i went down to the shop that i saw he was right. The covered portion of the speaker grille doesnt sit directly in front of the speaker anyway. If u look in the pics Duke posted, the speaker sits low down in the door where there are holes in the speaker grille

Make your own spacer, out of MDF and offset the hole 1" higher and back so it is in the center. Then the holes will make a difference. At least they did for me.

What happened? Why do you think they did not come out right. I may be able to help you. The great thing is you can always take off the grill cloth and redo them. If you feel the cutting out of the grill was not to good, you can always buy a new set. They are only $12.00 each grill. I used a good blade to do the cutting of the grill.

Redline, please explain, I'm about to do the same thing. What is difficult about this? Where is it easy to mess up?
