Default Whitezeds Thread.. new tweeter PODs

well, after around 6 months of fiddling around with tweeter positions/angles/levels/eq and so on im pretty sure i have it sorted....

stock position is crap. you can not fit a decent tweeter in there, even if you can, the stock tweeter grill is pathetic and will not give you a good sound, when people cut and flush mount then angle the tweeter there, it still looks really crap, the only real way around this is the fibreglass it and make it look good, so far i have not seen anyone do this..

in the kicks sound is good, but i could not deal with legs getting in the way and blocking the highs, so you dont really get a good sound by the time it reaches your ears. the idea is there but doesnt seem to work in the 350z....

in the door with woofer same as the kicks, with the propper custom job, i think it may work..

dash this is the final resting point for my tweeters, i have found i get no seperation from the woofer, there is nothing in the way to block the highs
with many weeks playing with angles, i found the spot that works for me, the highs reach both ears at the same time (drivers and passengers)

so how do i get the tweeters in the dash?
how do i make them look good?
the a pillars seem like a good idea so i velcroed the tweets on them an had them shooting up at the glass, it seemed to work good but when it bounced off the glass i got a bit of harshness, this was a tricky spot, if the tweeters we made flush they would of had about 3/4 of an inch extra room before they hit the glass, so this spot may still work really well, adjustment of the eq can also help. this spot was my 2nd fav..
i also have my alarm ultrasonics just sitting on my dash, so i wanted a home for them too.... so if the tweets went flush in the a pillars, i would still have my ultrasonics just sitting there...

my solution..
custom tweeter pods with custom ultrasonic slots that will sit on the dash..

these are being made right now, had the final fitting yesterday, they were being glassed last night and should be ready for painting friday......

hopefully i will have them installed sat or monday...

the good thing about these pods is that there is no cutting into my dash, they will simply be stuck on, (if i ever need to take them off i will have probally 15 mins of cleaning up the sticky crap)

wires you ask ???
they will simply run between where the pods will sit and the bottom join of the a pillar.... sounds a bit shitty / dodgy ? these are custom made baby, they will have a lip that runs alon the outside of them which will allow the wires to come thru and you wont see them......

the final fittings looked really good, even though they were just a shaped base with some pop sticks holding the tweeter base, i kind of got the idea.

hopefully in the next few days i will have them finished and have some pics

if they look crap, i will delete this thread.. :P

so far my HU is an eclipse.. forget what model
amp is eclipse PA5422 (i love this thing)
and fronts are eclipse 6.5 (2 ways)

sub is still coming.. unknown..........

Thank you for the VERY informative answer.
As you recall, I had started a thread about whether the stock tweeter location could be used and you hit the nail on the head.

What you have done looks great.

You also saved me a bunch of money - temporarily
I am doing nothing with my stock system until I see how your project comes out fully.

Kudos!

ok these have taken a few days longer than i 1st thought,

but i dont mind, today i had a look at them, they are 90% done before being painted and installed,

today the guy doing them took the mould for them to sit up on the dash so they sit right with no gaps...

they are looking really good, i am real happy with them, i wish i took a photo of them,

im confident they will look better than i originally thought, and i dont think they will be a tacky add on that looks crap...

will keep updated.....

looking forward to the pics man. If only i could come over and have a listen, im really interested to hear what difference this makes

ur right about not being able to fit a tweeter in the stock position

it took my installer alot of effort to get the MB Q-Line tweeters to fit. They are huge tweeters though, more than double stock diameter. I didnt want to fibreglass anything either, cant stand the stuff. I personally think the stock position looks better (the silver surround does wonders) than pods sitting on the dash, but each to their own

ill know tommorrow what it sounds like

i definatly would of prefered the stock location, im not a fan either of add ons modifying stuff.... but i felt this was the only solution, i had my tweets flush mounted in the stock location, and i didnt like the look of it.. plus i didnt like the sound it made..

if your ever coming over this way, just let me know...

your tweets with the silver bits do look good, im just waiting for it to be finished and you can take some more shots

I have my JL's in the stock location, I wont say it didnt take any work to fit them in there, but I did, and I dont think you would even notice that they didnt belong there.

I also have alpine tweeters in the kick panels running fill. Those tweeters are freakin stupidly huge.

Thanks for the update. Can you please tell the guy that I'm also interested in them? I hope he didn't throw away the molds.

Those actually looks pretty nice, good job!

I remember back in the day (mid 80's) Pioneer used to sell these dash tweeter/mid units that were add-ons to an existing stereo complete with volume control and a directional cone for aiming the highs and they velcroed to the dash The high end set sounded really nice because of the high crossover (5-6 kHz) and being able to direct the fill over the dash. The soundstage was preserved nicely. You, in a sense, have acheived the same thing in a much more elegant design.

Kudos to you!

Please let us know when the final design is installed AND if you are going to sell them

not my cup of tea, but im happy theyre finally in the car dude

id be painting the centre console white now too to carry the theme, or maybe just the 3 centre gauge tops. The gauges come out pretty easily, dont resort to tacky vinyl overlays

These are awesome.
Any plans to sell them? I am interested if you would ship to the US.
What component set is that part of?
What are these ultrasonics you speak of?

Thanks,

Vince

the ultra sonics are movement sensors for my alarm...
the tweets are eclipse

i did not make them, my car audio guy did, so no plans to sell them, plus they are pretty expencive as there is quite a bit involved
