Question Pioneer AVIC-D1

Quick question, just wondering if the AVIC-D1 can fit in the Nav cubby and if there are any problems with it opening and closing since its a double-din?

There is no way that the D1 could fit in the navigation cubby hole.

(That is short of some serious time with a sawsall and an air chisel)

Once you open the dash up you'll see that the only open area is the 2 DIN area where the factory radio sits. Up above it is covered in plastic at a depth of about 2.5" behind level with the dash - just enough to fit a screen in there and not much else. I had a tight time getting wires from the radio area to run up behind the gauges.

I don't know what lays behind the plastic behind the cubby but knowing most car manufactures there's some junk back there. That part of the dash also sees a bunch more light too so the screen is going to have some more brightness issues up there.

If you do cut away that part of the dash let me know what's back there. I suppose on one of those $10K custom labor install jobs someone might have tried it.

Its not worth the hassle cutting and altering the cubby hole. I say, get a good Double Din head unit and save the cubby hole for something else....like maybe a future boost controller, gauges. As far as Farenhiet screens, they have held up real well. My buddy has four in his Escalade for the past three years...still going strong!
