Default Alpine HU recessed too far

I just did my first radio install ever all by myself.. and it worked on the first try

However, the head unit is recessed too far into the dash and it looks pretty bad. I ordered the Alpine CDA-9851 from Crutchfield and they sent the wiring harness and the DIN kit. I threw the sleeve into the DIN kit and when the radio slides into the sleeve, it just doesn't fit flush with the dash. Even the **** on the head unit does not come flush with the dash.

Anyone ever seen this or have any ideas for me to get a better placement? The DIN kit cubby hole is perfectly flush with the dash, but not the HU.

I got my deck from Crutchfield too... The DIN kit that it came with the deck had horrible firment... I did a search and there is another DIN kit for the Z by American International... I have the CDA-9855 and the fitment is excellent (9 out of 10)... I hope that helps...

I remember having similar problems when installing my Alpine 9833 HU. It seemed like the headunit fell way too back into the dash, or was just plain sticking out, and ridiculously so. What you should be able to do is, using the stock metal bracket, line up some holes on the bracket with holes in the metal casing of the receiver itself. Then just use screws to hold the head unit in place. Line up the receiver until you find the perfect mounting depth so that it's flush with the dash, then tighten these screws to keep it nice and snug. Mine fits perfectly now, AND looks custom. Good luck with the install!

I have the 9847, and it is recessed also. At first it drove me crazy, but now I'm pretty much use to it. Now the only problem I have is that my face plate seems to rattle loose.

American International kit is awesome. I highly suggest changing to it. Also before install, paint it using Plasti-Kote grey bumper paint. It is a perfect match to the surrounding plastic.

I think the problem lies in the fact that you're using the metal sleeve for mounting, and not bolting the radio to the mounting kit with the supplied side pieces.

I have had 2 different Alpine radio's in my Z, and I have never used the mounting sleeve (with the bending tabs, etc). The radio should have come with some screws for securing the radio from its sides. Check it out...
