Default Best free-air sub for stock location, no box...

I was wondering what people would consider the best sub to put in the stock location, if you weren't planning on putting a box of some sort there. I understand that the sound will not be anywhere as good, but I don't need perfection, just something decent.

I like the JL 10W6v2 but not for any scientific reason. Basically, I like the way it looks, yes I'll admit to being a subwoofer poseur. However, for various reasons, I understand this sub really needs a box, so that's out for now.

Any other suggestions?

I'm in the same boat as you are. Just wanted something decent in the stock location. My audio store recomended the JL IB4 free air for the location. I didn't like it and I am certainly no audio snob. The enclosure was then dynamatted. Still not much of a difference. Then we tried to fill in the space with expandable foam and switched to the JL 10w0. Not much better. I haven't heard a verdict from those who have made an enclosure for the stock location, but I am beginning to think that "decent" sound is not possible in that location.

I think "decent" applies to the install I did. Search for "subwoofer" on this site, and you'll be linked to my pending MDF box design thread. There, you can see a preview of what's to come, and eventually download either *.pdf files to print or the actual AutoCad files for use.

BTW-I've got a RF Z-Series 10" in the stock location, and it's as good or better then the stock Blose.

Just get a custom box in the trunk underneath the strut bar, thats what Im doing. Igot a pair 10s Elemental Ks in a custom box with an amp rack behind it covered in plexiglass and Neons. Go big all they way and it will sound good as well, we got a Z so the sound system should match its coolness too. I'll update with pics when it is fully installed.

I put a Pioneer TS-W254F free air sub in the stock location, powered by about 200 watts. It sounds very good, but there's no question a higher location in the rear would sound better.
