Default Question about ohms...

Sorry guys for all these questions. Right before purchasing I got warned by a friend about ohms.

My speakers are supposedly 4ohms, the subs I want to purchase are 2 ohms and the amps can be at 2 or 4 ohms... but i want to keep it at 2 ohms since the power output is greater (420w vs 210)

Can you mix speakers of different ohms with subs? Im sorry if im not making any sense... cuase its really not making any sense to me. I dont understand how resistance can blow my speakers =\ or if it will....

Equivalent Resistance(in series) = (R1+R2)
Equivalent Resistance(in parallel) = (1/r1 + 1/r2 )^-1

Yes a 2 ohm and a 4 ohm speaker can be used together with no ramifications

to get closer to 2 ohms you could use a 8ohm and a 2ohm to get a equivalent resistance of 1.6ohm.

1.3 ohms would be the resistance if you put a 2 and a 8 in parrellel

However they will have different currents in parrellel and therefore different volumes. So this is not desireable for speakers.

im sorry... i sort of understand but not really =\

and i noticed that this amp only comes in the 2ohm setting bleh

so if i wanna wire 4 speakers who have a 4ohm and 2 subs at 2ohm to this amp it would be a bad idea?

kabs,
I'm assuming you're talking about a 4 channel amp? I also assume your 4 speakers are mids and/or highs? Then you have 2 subs that are 2 ohm? It's not a problem to run your highs at 4 ohms and your lows at 2 ohms....no an issue at all.

in order to get the most power outta your amp, you want your sub to equal the resitance of the amp.

max power transfer = (R(amp)^2)/(4 Rsub) which occurs when Ramp=Rsub.

so keep that in mind to make your sound system put out as much power as possible...

i'm not sure if your going to have enough power to run those Type R's. They need to have a lot of power.

Wire your subwoofer's 4 ohm coils in parrallel with each othe to get a two ohm load. JL Audio has a great document showing you how to wire various speaker impedances to each other to match a given amplifier.

If the speaker needs more than 400 watts to "run" pull them out and beat the salesmen with them until his eyes pop out because he ripped you off. If you're not pushing 110 dB and hearing loss with them at 400 watts I'd be really surprised.
