Default any aftermarket sub box that fits in stock sub location

anybody tried any of the thin truck sub boxes with an upward or downward firing position and how does it sound...

the opening is about 9 inches high by 16 wide... a 7x16 box should fit, but I'm not sure about depth...

The stock sub position is a terrible spot for a sub. The sound that will be produced will not be of high quality. You are better off going with a Z-Enclosures box. The space under the strut bar is useless anyway.

agreed, or if you dont want to loose the understrut space, have a side box or infront of strut box built

I disagree completely. I have a roadster, and by necessity have a sub in the stock location. With a well constructed custom box and the right amount of power, it sounds great. Now, you can't have a mega-bass system using the stock location but my JL10W3v2 powered by a 250 watt JL amp sounds phenomenal. Plenty of nice tight bass, and not a single rattle.

Well having a conv. is a whole other story though. In all reality, the stock sub location is terrible for sound. It points the speaker in the wrong direction to get both good and clean sound. I understand it is more conducive to the roadster, but when you have choices like we do in the coupes, the stock location is just not adequate. If you are going to use the stock spot, you might as well leave the stock Bose in.

You are right with the convertible being a whole different story. There really is no other place to put the sub, and there is a HUGE difference in acoustics with the top down. Honestly, with the top down, having the sub immediately behind you and firing straight at you is almost required for perceiving adequate bass while moving. I'm not saying that in the coupe the stock sub location is best. It definitely isn't, and I think a lot of people know that. If you really want to keep the sub in that location, however, it's not as if it is going to sound horrible, or not going to be an improvement over the stock Bose. That's all I was trying to say.

I don't plan to have the sub point at the seat.. it will be an upward/down firing box which some people say sounds decent...

my sub is for pure listening pleasure only... not to wake up neighbors...

that said... I don't like the basslink and am looking more towards those slim truck boxes... or even custom building one...

in my experience, subs sound better when reflected off the body/chassis as the sound gets dissipated and the low frequencies sound like they're coming from everywhere....

but I'm not an audiophile so bear with me...

I'm cursious as well. I'm not an audiophile either. I just want a little more bass. I would think that a small truck box or something similar would do the trick. Once mine comes in next week (hopefully), I'll be looking into adding some type of enclosure in that area.

I have just installed a custom MDF box into my Coupe using the plans posted elsewhere on this site. The compartment is Dynomatted and I run a 12' Nakamichi sub firing downwards via an Alpine Amp. The difference between this set up and the stock Bose is chalk and cheese; the increase in bass is significant and as far as my ears and music tastes are concerned, more than meets my requirements.

For someone to state you may as well leave the stock Bose in if you go down this path is just crap in my opinion. Sure it might not be as good as a custom setup in the rear hatch but it is definitely significantly better than stock. And if you need the space in the hatch for golf clubs and work stuff, it's definitely more practical.

Yes I used the box posted by camaro194.

The box is fastened to the roof of the stock compartment so that the front face of the subwoofer faces towards the floor of the compartment. The angled aspect of the box runs in a similar plane to the angle of the front of the compartment if that makes sense.

I have the install photos coming soon, however I can go and take some photos and email them to you if that helps.

I am very satisfied with the bass - the Nakamichi is nice and crisp.

Ok, I can picture what you are saying. What did you use to fasten it to the roof of the compartment? Pics would be helpful as well. I'll be attempting this project in a month or so.

do you think there's a market to make these commercially?

I wish I didn't have to make it myself...

anybody have any idea how much volume it holds?

Making the box wouldnt be too hard if you have the tools and the patience.

I have sent some pics to rmesola (who can post them if he likes) and will ask the installers how they fastened the box to the roof of the compartment in the next day or so.

All I can say is that box is fastened pretty darn tight!
