I do have a question about the detectors though, I was reading through some of the reviews and did not see a clear answer on this.

Suppose you are speeding down the street.Does your radar detector read in all bands simultaneously or do you have to have it set on a certain band to detect the incoming frequency. Like k, ka, x vg2. Or do you just turn it on and it warns you to what band is being used to detect you?

All bands unless you program it otherwise.

Thus staying current with evolving radar technology. It's also highly configurable with remote display and sound attachments avaliable for a stealth install.

I'm starting to come around on this . V1 seems like the best one that I can get.

I didn't feel like doing an installation with radar, so I bought the wireless Solo2. It's worked well so far.

Call Valentine Research at 1 800 331 3030 and ask for a returned V1 and you will get 10% off the retail price of $399. It will be the latest version V1.8 POP2 w/ Euro-mode and 3.826 firmware and that comes with all the accessories and a 1 year warranty.

On that note, hard wiring a radar detector in a Z (enth and up) is easy because there is switched power right up at the rear view mirror. So there are no long cords to run and you can wrap your short cord around the mirror base when not in use. Add to that one of the mirror base detector mounts and no more suction cup marks on the windshield either.

Makes for a slick install, and easy hiding for parking.

How does that hide it? Do you hang your coat on it?

I got wind of that from the Robb Robert collection. I just checked out that site and it does not cover the vg2 band..

Last couple of sites I read (radartest, radarbuster) seemed to put the v1 behind the rx65 from bel and 8500 x50 from escort (same detector im told). sure they say the v1 is great but not better than the other two unless you need arrows and is 100 more.

so i throw this out there - is the v1 really the best or is everyone just programmed to say that

The pro Review sites have never given V1 its due credit.
V1 doesn't advertise or sell on any other sites....
The Reviews motivated me to try the high marks Passport 5yr ago...
then after one day of abuse I traded it for a V1!

One thing broken with V1 is the ear plug adapter's resistance
lowers the speaker volume by ~30%. No sleep for the passenger.

There are other factors that made me decide to go with the V1 over the others besides just the arrows, although having them makes it even better.

1) The single control, everything you need to do in one place, no trying to remember what button on top of the unit was city and what was dim, that sort of stuff.

2) Volume level is obvious in the dark by touch and sight by day so you aren't surprised when it alerts and you accidentally turned it all the way up or worse, all the way down without realizing it.

3) The forward arrow is huge, even if you have the volume down, it gets your attention.

4) 1 year warranty included, after that most repairs are $45, the others want another $29 for a 2 year warranty and then I wonder if it can be extended.

5) Upgrades forever for the price of the parts and shipping. With new technology coming out every so often, do you really want to by another detector for $300?

6) Add ons like the remote display etc. Because it has retained a similar design for so long, there are lots of people doing mods. I can't think of a time I have seen a rear view mirror with a Passport display inside of it. There are also people working on PC software for remote display and since I have a CarPC, it is something I might want to play with.

Just my thoughts
Chris
