Take it from and acoustic engineer here .... an amplifier can make or break your system. In the case of using a stock stereo with a high quality speakers .. you are breaking the system. The stock HU is internally EQ'd and limited to protect (as well as enhance) the stock speakers.

I'l agree that speakers are your first upgrade .. but there is a definite need to upgrade the source at some point too. In a car .. who cares ... noise floor is so high that it is worthless to do extensive upgrade ... unless its free

Thanks for the good advice in this thread - how about some clarification? I'm a newbie Z owner (since Saturday!!!). Somewhat ignorant re. audio.

Have the Enthusiast, want better sound, including better bass (which sucks now), not interested in high volume. I'm willing to spend $600-700 (maybe a few bucks more if it's worth it).

Do I buy HU, amp/speakers, amp/sub woofer, or what combination?

If I get amp/speakers and no sub, will the bass improve? If I add the sub later, is it powered from the same amp that powers the other speakers?

Buy a nice Pioneer or Alpine head unit from Crutchfield (they include all the instructions and harnesses you need to install it for free). Spend $175-200

Head to ebay .. pick you favorite brand of speakers and get their front components speakrs 6.5" for our cars. Don't do the rear speakers (they cost too much money and take too much time to upgrade for this situation). Spend $175-200

Pick out a couple of 10" subwoofers that you like and check if they are ok to work in a small sealed eclosure (see below). Spend $125

Give mike at Zenclosures a call ... grab a set of spacer rings for the 350Z doors ($15) and a single 10" box ($100).

Then you need a 4 channel amp .. on this budget .. Hifionics makes a good one .. ~$150

Knuconceptz.com (store is on ebay)makes the best amp kits .. and you'll need a 4-ga kit ~$50

Now ... I did exceed the budget ... but you'll be hard pressed to find many stereos under $1500 that'll beat this setup (assuming you do the work yourself).

Not to pimp out my own stuff but I have a pair of Boston Acoustic RC620's for sale on eBay. They are used but in good condition and at a good price.

I have the same pair in my Z right now and they'll make your ears bleed!

I unhooked the rear speakers so it's these and a sub. Sounds awesome.
