I know I've seen one before (I forget who's it was though), but have some questions:
1. What's the max cubic feet one can expect?
2. Is it possible to design a box that places the sub under the factory carpet? All the ones I've seen so far place the sub sticking through the carpet, but give that I have no tinted windows, and often place things in the hatch, this is not desirable for me.
3. does anyone have a box like this? Any pictures?

I made mine out of MDF, it raises the floor about 4 inches. Completely stealth.
I used the factory mat as a template for the new carpet, I should have it finished this week and I'll post pics.

You get 7" of depth and ~ 2.45ft^3 if you glass in the whole area.
I'll dig up some old pics for you.
edit ... this is assuming you remove the foam and basically make this while thing a false floor.

my spare tire is useless to my now anyway, so mind as well just yank everything there out. My only concern is when I go to sell the car, I'd prefer something that can be removed vs something that becomes part of the car
A fiberglass box will not be part of the car unless you want it to. Simply lay down a layer of aluminum foil before laying the glass and it'll lift right out. I'll see what kind of in-build-process pics I took of it.

Since you don't have any pics yet, here is my old post.

If you want to yank the spare tire out you may have an easier time but you will have the same height to work with as I did. About 6 3/4" if memory serves me correctly.
Good luck
There should be a few other members that did the spare tire removal but some of them built the floor up or left the sub sticking up 1 or 2" due to larger drivers (like a 12"). You shouldn't have much trouble finding some quality drivers to mount flush under the floor. Depends what you want though.
Mine is pretty modest with one 10" but it is still loud.

i am almost done wtih the layout of this Z i am working on, so far, it loosk like even with a full strength 1/2" mdf fake floor, a pretty hefty sub, his floor will only rise by 1.5"

cool I'd love to see it!
I'm going to be running a SEAS Lotus Sub in my own car, so should have good options to work with in the spare location, since they don't need a tremendous amount of airspace from what I understand

lol i remember when the show first aired, back in PA, we got requiests for all sorts of stuff...fishtank, waterfall, the best was...can you build a tank for my pet tarrantula? lol
i was almost tempted, i said, how about htis, we have a motorized door for the cage, and wire it to the alarm, so when the alarm goes off, it release the spider, that would be an awesome security...protected by venom lol
but we mostly just laughed and told them we arent as pimpy as WCC sowwy

You can also utilize the floor of the car by using it as the bottom of the box. Seal the edges with liquid nails. I was able to get 1.25cuft of usable space to fit a 6.75in depth 12' sub. Extremely stealthy. I carry a small fleece blanket in the glove compartment. Throw it over the sub when you park.
