where exactly is the factory amp located?

Actually thats true, but you will find it under a large black styrofoam block on the left side of your hatch, beside the spare. Essentially its between the left wheel well and the spare, and you can trace the wires along the left rear wheel well which run to the amp. You will have to take everything out of the hatch, including some side panels to remove it, but thats where its at...
