Hehe, I was tempted to buy that set at CompUSA awhile back, but wasn't sure how it would work. Glad to hear that it worked out for you.

Good point on the Deluo GPS receiver. For $100 not a bad deal and it says it will work with MS Street & Trips, MS Map Point, Delorme Street Atlas, and TravRoute Door-to-Door 2000 so if I don;t like the software that comes with it (Rand McNally Streetfinder) I could always buy one of the other software packages at a later date.

Will hopefully be ordering the Opus 150W DC-DC power supply tomorrow.

Oh, and just for kicks decided to mess around with a TV Tuner card in the machine. It worked great in the house, but we will see how it does with an antenna in the car. I don't expect a whole lot, but for $40 the tv tuner card will get used elsewhere if it doesn't work in the car.

one problem with that mouse... can it tell the difference between you moving it and the car moving? might be tough to use when the car is in motion...

I hope touch screen and voice is enough, I have a USB keyboard and mouse to use when needed, but Im trying my best not to use either on a regular basis, whatever the touchscreen limits me to for typical use is best, I dont need to be fooling with it too much unless Im totally stopped and working on something in particular.

 

I won't be using any pointing device while the car is in motion.

 

certainly wise, and I was thinking when just driving around with it in the car the cursor will likely be all over, but I suppose not that I think about it that really doesnt make any difference since it shouldnt click itself. let it roam, no big deal.

 

hmmm, this idea just struck me while I was doing my grounding kit.

For all the screws holding the motherboard, hdd, etc... Anybody thought of putting a dap of Loctite on the screws to prevent it from coming loose?

 

There is a button the bottom that you have to hold in while using the mouse in the air.

 

if it receives rattles that severe, Id be a bit more concerned with other problems involving the electronics.

none the less, my hard drive is held on by nylon screws. and the case is all bolts, hopefully they will stay put. loktite isnt a bad idea, cant hurt anything.

the computer is now "in the car" even if it is hooked up to nothing, and happy to say there are no rattles, and it doesnt seem to mind. still have to do the mailbox slot tho. Im procrastinating on that cause I know thats gonna be a long time goin at it with the ol jigsaw to make the face fit right.

 

jigsaw???? Dude, you need to invest in a good dremel. Trust me, it worked like a champ when I cut a hole in the glove box. Plus, you will want to use a sanding bit with the dremel once you cut the whole to smooth off the plastic edges.

Just don't run it at too high of a speed or you will melt the plastic!

 

So I just ordered the Opus DC-DC 150W power supply, what sux is that they are backordered but should get it sent out in about two weeks.

Learned some interesting things. First this power supply will work with ITX boards, but you need to specify that you are going to use an VIA board (M) when you order because he said they have to a make slight change to the boot up timing for this application.

Also, he told me that the delay in the 90W ITX power supply coming to market was due to some rework that had to be done due to more noise then they wanted. He did mention some additional features that the 90W would have that the current ones don't. One was a heating module add-on that would heat up your system for folks in colder climates...hehe not much of an issue here in Texas. The other feature was something to do with headunit powering on after the PC is powered on....not sure what that would really do for you.

With that being said, I didn't really care for those features so hopefully I will get my Smart power supply in a couple of weeks.

 

oh no no, Im cutting a face plate to mount everything in cleanly out of diamond plate aluminum. I dont think a dremel would take too kindly to that.

I think he means a dremel tool to cut the plastic mailbox slot in the back where the dvd will poke through.

Did you do the install yourself on your stereo upgrades, specifically the distribution block under the passenger seat?

Well, some of it was installed by professionals and some by myself. I've done it all before on several cars, but I learned that some things it's worth paying to have done vs. others.

For example, I installed the headunit, screen, PC, etc. While I let the stereo shop install the amps, speakers.

For the power distribution block, it's not that difficult to do, but it can be tricky sometimes getting through the firewall from the battery. I typically will pay (~$40) a stereo shop to run the power wires for me to my desired location.

 

PC installed.
Internal Slot-load DVD externally installed.
RF Receiver for keyboard/mouse installed.
GPS Receiver installed.

Need power, screen, audio.

Baby steps....but getting there.

I got to use the Deluo GPS on a road trip this weekend. It worked pretty good.

 

In this post the picture has the PC and something to the right with 4 red led's and a green one. what is that for?
