I have an old school 10w6 (d6). I know they are rated for 300watts rms, and I also know most amps are slightly overrated. Kenwood is pretty good quality, and I have always had great luck with them, but my question is do you think this much overpowering would be alright if I just have the gain turned way down (like halfway), or is it just overkill. Its the KAC7202:
150 watts RMS x 2 at 4 ohms (230 watts x 2 at 2 ohms)
460 watts RMS x 1 bridged output at 4 ohms
so it would actually be more than 460watts rms since I will bring the sub down to 3 ohms ran parallel. Thanks a lot.

More speakers are killed with under-sized amps being driven to clipping than over-sized amps over heating and smoking coils.
Most speakers will complain rather loudly before smoking. The basket/coil assembly will bounce and grind creating all kinds of painful noise. I've also found that the people who can't hear clipping also can't hear the speaker motor destroying themselves ... heck, those people just can't plain hear!
Lowering the gain will go a long way into protecting the speaker. In theory you could dial in exactly 300 watts maximum power while driving the subwoofer with pink noise.

Will you be putting this in a sealed or a ported box? If you put it in a small sealed box, don't worry about it ... just pound away.
If you port it, my advice is to run a very low bass song and crank the stereo (disconnect the main speakers as not to deafen yourself) until you hear the audible "blat" of the driver bottoming. You can either note that as the "max" level you can play the system, or you can lower your gains and do that again... iterating until you can no longer bottom the driver.
