Default Front Speaker Spacer 6.5''

To replace the front speakers you have to remove the door panel.
You can 6.5 speakers with some modifications (the front speaker is a mix of speakers and spacer all in one).
I cut the original speaker out and screwed the new speakers into what was left of the bracket
Guys, where can i buy the Spacer I need to install the front speaker? I will be installing the JL XR650-CSi.

I got confuse what other post, Does the Stock Speaker come with something i could re-use?

Thanks.

The stock speaker doesn't have much of a magnet cause it's a piece of junk, so it doesn't need any spacer, but it has a bracket it's built into and screws into the door. You can reuse it as a spacer, but you'll basically be destroying your speaker since you have to cut it out of the bracket to use the bracket as a spacer. What you can do is trace the speaker bracket on MDF and cut your own spacer, or I think someone on here sells them. The pic shows the stock speaker at the back, and new speaker in the front

Making spacers is a piece of cake.. I would recommend over using the stock speaker. Simply get a spare sheet of MDF from Lowes or HD in the "extra pieces" bin. Or buy an MDF 1' x 4' shelf. Your speaker magnet will determine the width MDF you will need. 2" speaker depth equates to about 1/2" MDF, 2.75" equates to about 1.5" so you may need to glue two cutouts together.

Do as you see in the above pics..trace out the spacer using the original speaker and cut with a jigsaw. Use the guides that come with your new speaker for the inner hole diameter.

For a super secure fit, cut a piece of 1/8" neoprene to act as a gasket. And use T-nuts and lock washers to secure the speaker to the MDF.

OK so now I see the JL's have

Woofer Mounting Depth (G) 2.81 in. / 71.4 mm

Good luck. My guess is you will be devilishly close to the door frame. You might want to consider pods.

Default Pods??

I was actually just checking that out, the JL's are (G) 2.81 in. / 71.4 mm Mounting Depth. Do you guys think I need the pods?? or the spacer will be fine?

I really want to avoid pods, but I also want a clean install.

Depends.. Plenty of people on this site have installed similar depth spkrs without. The depth is not the only factor. The shape and diameter of the magnet will be a factor of just where the window hits when it lowers.

I was able to install a deep set of MBQs without a huge spacer because although the magnet was deep, it had a small diameter. I have also tried to install a set of CDT HDs which have a depth of almost 3" and gave up because the magnet had a huge diameter.

So ,my advice is try. Use a large spacer, maybe 1.25 to 1.5" thick. You may also want to try to offset the spacer hole so that your speaker is sitting slightly further away from the lowered window. If you want to be really tricky, you mught try to angle the spacer (look up angled spacer onthis forum) so that one side of the magnet is further back than the other.

From what I've read on this board, the spacers are a great option for these deeper spkrs as they have much more room. I haven't used them myself.

When I was installing the HDs I built a fiberglass angled spacer to try to get around the depth problem. It is 2.5" on one side and slants to .25" on the other. It angles the speaker up and back towards the passengers. I will send it to you if you want it, just need shipping money. If you like and it works I can show you how to build a similar one for the other side.

stock spacer:

I havent taken the doorpanel off but i want to use the stock spacer. I am going to cut out the stock speaker. Does anyone know how big the stock spacer is? reason I am asking is I dont want to buy the spacers if I am able to reuse the stocks.

Default JL XR650-CSi

The Woofer Magnet Outer Diameter of my speaker is 3.23 in. / 82.0 mm.
2.81'' Deep

I think I can get away with a 1'' Spacer.

I'll update once I start the install.

Thanks

Focal 165 are 71mm

1" likely isn't going to be big enough. I would guess 1.25 or bigger.

Default i don't want pod either.

Yes, I want to avoid pods. I want to find the right Deep for the spacer so i can build or buy one and still have a stock look.

The stock speaker converted into a spacer is a little over an inch if I remember. I used it for installing a set of Diamond Audio Hex once. It might work for you and it might not. 2.81 is pretty deep.

Don't be afraid of making some out of MDF. A jigsaw will cut through it very quickly and gluing 2 sheets of 3/4" together is easy too.

The problem without pods is not just the spacer. it will be getting the speaker to sit in there without hitting the door panel. I know a few people have had to whittle out some of the plastic on the back side of the door panel to make it fit. One cool thing about making your own spacer is that you can offset the hole. Instead of making it dead center you can move it back and up to match up with the hole in the door panel and perhaps not hit it.

Maybe you are lucky with MBQ. If they are anything like the MBQ PCEs they have a small magnet. Yes they are pretty deep, but the small magnet keeps them from hitting the lowered window. I was able to mount the MBQs using 1" spacers.

But I didn't like the MBQs, they sounded too shrilly and bright for me. Sold them .

Check out the MBQ series. You see what I mean about the magnet, it has a small diameter, you can get by with a smaller spacer.

Unless you got the signature series. I believe they are a larger magnet.

The pods are incredible, Only downside I have found is it takes some time getting used to not hitting them with your feet when you swing your leg out to get out of the car.
